    Thessaloniki, April 6 (MPA)

Greece's leading role in the Balkans was ascertained once more during the Thessaloniki-held Conference on the Balkans, held by the European Socialist Party.

The participating European leaders of Socialist parties, concluded the conference with the following decision:

"At a time critical for the economic and political development of the Balkans, the Conference expresses its full support for a regional cooperation, whih will be based on the aversion of conflicts which (aversion) is the only way to secure peace and stability in the region."

It should be noted that the majority of the participating Socialists gave emphasis to the Greek government's efforts, as well as to the Greek Premier Kostas Simitis, for the creation of a climate of peace, friendship and security in the southern Balkan region.

"There is only one Thessaloniki in the world. It is my hometown and my seat and, therefore, it is only natural for me to come here often", stated New Democracy party leader Kostas Karamanlis upon his arrival in Thessaloniki.

Mr. Karamanlis is visiting Thessaloniki for the first time after his election to the party's leadership. [03] CRISIS IN ALBANIA CONTINUES

    Web Posted: 20:46 GMT+2

    Tirana, April 6 (MPA)

In spite of the efforts exerted by the Albanian government, the crisis continues to ferment in the neighboring country this time by various groups who are opposed to restoring order. Yesterday, a group of masked individuals blocked the Albanian Premier Bashkim Fino from visiting regions of northern Albania.

Speaking to the Macedonian Press Agency, Mr. Fino accused President Berisha of maintaining the tension in the Albanian public opinion and supported the Greek position for the deployment of mixed international force army units in his country which will be placed in every crisis spot.
