Greece's Minister of National Defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos said yesterday that the Greek force will be able to advance within the week. He added that the problems between the countries stem from the previous century. Mr. Pangalos said that the neighboring country is a failed empire, unable to adjust to the new order of things and which has lost its course towards development. "This country, which needs the international arena, needs peace and needs economic and social restructures, maintains an empirical stance," Mr. Pangalos stated, pointing at Ankara's political leaders and adding that they continue to want to dominate and expand into the region. "For Greece to become Turkey's protectorate is something inconceivable for the Greek people. They (Turkey) must understand that they have chosen the wrong opponent," he said. [B] BALKANS[03] MILOSEVIC IN ATHENS YESTERDAY, MET WITH GREEK FOREIGN MINISTERWeb Posted: 19:27 GMT+2Belgrade, April 20 (MPA)Serb President Slobodan Milosevic was in Athens yesterday where he met with Greece's Foreign Minister Theodros Pangalos, according to Belgrade's news agency "BETA".The two men reportedly met for one half hour and discussed the results of the contacts held in Athens on Wednesday between Montenegro's Premier Milo Juganovic and Mr. Pangalos. During his stay in Athens, Mr. Juganovic has also met with bank officials who agreed to grant Montenegro with a 90-million-dollar loan. According to political circles in Belgrade, Mr. Milosevic's "private" visit in Athens is merely that, given that it took place right after Mr. Juganovic's also "private" visit to Athens. As it is commonly known, the two men's relationship is quite tense. [04] BULGARIA: UNION OF DEMOCRATIC FORCES HAS STRONG LEAD IN ELECTIONSWeb Posted: 19:27 GMT+2Sofia, April 20 (MPA)The Union of Democratic Forces is sure to have won a sweeping victory at Bulgaria's parliamentary elections where aproximately 70% of the voters turned out at the polling stations, as the first polls have revealed.According to last night's early exit polls, with 97.8% of the ballots counted, the UDF conservative faction appears to have gained 52.23% of the ballots and 136 seats in parliament, while the Socialists pale in comparison with 22.17% and 56 seats. Third party is the pro-Turkish one, headed by Ahmet Dogan, with 7.5% and 18 seats in parliament, while the Euro-Left gained a surprising 5.52% of the votes. The Business Bloc came away with 4.95% of the votes.
