    [01] MEETING ON THE COURSE OF INFLATION AND THE BASIC ECONOMIC INDEXES

    The course of inflation and the basic economic indexes, the implementation of this year's budget and the drawing up of the 1998 budget, were the main topics discussed in the meeting that was held today at the National Economy Ministry with the participation of Minister of National Economy Yiannos Papantoniou and Minister of Development Vaso Papandreou.

    In a meeting that was held yesterday between Prime Minister Kostas Simitis and mr.Papantoniou were determined the main axes of next year's economic policy that will be presented by the Prime Minister in his speech during the formal opening of Thessaloniki's 62 nd International Trade Fair.

    [02] STEPS TOWARD A RECONCILIATION BETWEEN THE EDUCATION MINISTER AND THE TEACHERS

    Education Minister Gerasimos Arsenis stated that he is ready to hear the teachers' proposals for reforms in the education system in an effort to end the deadlock of the past few days.

    From their part, the teachers admit that there is a problem with the existing system used for their appointment to state schools but they do not accept its abolition neither the proposal according to which, the teachers will be appointed only after written tests.

    A mass protest rally organized by the teachers' unions will be held in Athens this afternoon.

    [03] THE CHIEF OF THE GREEK NATIONAL DEFENSE GENERAL STAFF COMPLETES HIS VISIT TO MOSCOW TOMORROW

    Chief of the Greek National Defense General Staff wing-commander Athanasios Tzoganis, who is on a visit to Moscow since August 25 at the invitation of his Russian counterpart, had a number of meetings with Russian Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev, his counterpart general Kvasnin, the vice-president of the Parliament Defense Committee, members of the Russian Security Council and Moscow Patriarch Alexios B'.

    In a press conference at the Greek Embassy in the Russian capital, mr.Tzoganis characterized the visit as successful and underlined the friendly and sincere atmosphere in the meetings he had with Russian officials, stressing that bilateral contacts will continue.

    [04] UNIQUE WARNING SYSTEM FOR TIDAL WAVES WILL BE IN OPERATION SOON IN GREECE

    A warning system for the tidal waves, known as "tsunami", which are caused by underwater earthquakes in southern Aegean will be in operation in a few months in Greece. The network, which is financed by the European Union and is created with the participation of 8 European countries, was presented in the 29 th General Assembly of the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior.

    Seismology researcher in the Geodynamic Institute in Athens mr.Gerasimos Papadopoulos stated that the "tsunami" are tidal waves caused by underwater earthquakes, volcano explosions or landslides in an underwater environment and when they reach the coasts they can be up to 10-15 meters high.

    In Greece, such waves have caused extensive damage many times in the past. On July 9, 1956 a 20-meters-high tidal wave swept the Cyclades islands in central Aegean as well as, southern Aegean regions after an earthquake that measured 7,5 on the Richter scale, while on February 7, 1963 a 6-meter-high tidal wave created by an underwater landslide caused damage in the western Corinthian Bay in the Peloponnese.

    [05] INVESTIGATIONS CONTINUE FOR THE CAUSES OF LAST NIGHT'S AIR COLLISION OF TWO GREEK FIGHTER JETS

    Investigations continue to determine the causes of the air collision of two "A-7" Greek Air Force fighter jets that occurred last night over Mesinia in the Peloponnese, southern Greece during a routine training flight.

    The pilots of the two jets, who were rescued after using successfully the ejector-seat system, are expected to give very useful information during their testimony.

    Nevertheless, according to official sources, the accident was probably the result of human error in the disengagement procedure.

    [06] GLIGOROV IS INTRANSIGENT REGARDING THE NAME OF FYROM

    FYROM's President Kiro Gligorov appeared again intransigent in an interview to a Yugoslav newspaper stating that he rejects the name "Nova Makedonia", which according to his statement, had been proposed by the government of former Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis.

    Mr.Gligorov also said that his country does not have territorial claims over Greece while he tried to justify the stance of certain members of the nationalist VMRO-DPMNE party who persist that FYROM must keep the national flag with the "Star of Vergina".

    [07] PRESIDENT CLERIDES WANTS THE STATEMENTS OF THE ITALIAN GOVERNMENT TO BECOME MORE CLEAR

    Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides insists that the statements of the Italian government on Cyprus should become more clear, while its position that it recognizes what the international organizations and the other governments recognize, should become more evident.

    The above were stated by Cypriot Democratic Alarm party president Nikos Anastasiades after his meeting with mr.Clerides.

    [08] TENSION ESCALATES IN THE SERB REPUBLIC OF BOSNIA

    The first armed incident between supporters of Serb Republic of Bosnia President Biljana Plavsic and followers of former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadjic took place in Banja Luka yesterday, according to a BBC report.

    Incidents occurred in the early morning hours today in the town of Brcko in the Serb Republic when SFOR troops tried to seize its police station. According to Yugoslav media reports, hundreds of people took to the streets and stopped the NATO peace-keeping force from taking over the police station. In their effort to break up the crowd, the SFOR soldiers fired warning shots in the air and according to unconfirmed information, a young demonstrator was injured.

    Also, in the town of Bijelina SFOR troops occupied the local police station, based on information that came from a NATO force representative in Tuzla.

    Meanwhile, FRY President Slobodan Milosevic expressed the wish to visit Banja Luka and contribute to the de-escalation of the crisis. The situation in the Serb Republic of Bosnia is watched closely by the US government and the leadership of NATO.

    [09] HALBROOKE: THE CYPRUS PROBLEM IS A VERY COMPLICATED ISSUE

    The Cyprus problem is a very complicated issue and concerns an island that continues to be divided for the past 23 years, stated US presidential envoy Richard Halbrooke.

    Mr.Halbrooke said in an interview that the Cyprus issue is an important dispute between Greece and Turkey, two countries that are important NATO allies.

    He also mentioned that US President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright are willing to make every effort to help in the solution of the problem and to bring stability to south-eastern Mediterranean which, together with Bosnia, constitute the most dangerous regions in Europe, as he characteristically stated.
