NEWS HEADLINES[A] GREECE[B] BALKANSNEWS IN DETAIL[A] GREECE[01] 810 WORKERS WERE FIRED DAILY IN GREECE IN THE MONTH OF MAYWeb Posted: 15:57 GMT+2Athens, 27/06/1998 (MPA) Unemployment in the month of May reached 9.12% of Greece's work force and showed an increase of 2.9% compared to the same period last year.It should be noted, that 810 people were fired from their jobs daily, while one out of three Greeks has failed in the effort to find another job. Specifically, according to official data, 20.267 people were fired last May while in May of last year the number of people who were laid off was 14.803. At the same time in the April-May period the work force in Greece was increased by 14.701 people. [02] HALBROOKE WAS BOOED DURING HIS SPEECH IN ATHENSWeb Posted: 15:57 GMT+2Athens, 27/06/1998 (MPA) US presidential envoy Richard Halbrooke speaking yesterday in a graduation ceremony of the American College students in Athens caused the strong reaction of the audience when he referred to the United States' position which supports Turkey's accession into the European Union.In order to appease those present in the event, Mr. Halbrooke avoided to make a special reference to the Russian S-300 anti-aircraft missiles omitting part of his speech in which he maintained that the missiles will not benefit the defense of Cyprus but on the contrary they will attract attacks. Mr. Halbrooke also referred to the issue of Kosovo characterizing as especially serious the situation in the region and expressed fears of an all-out war. [05] TSOCHATZOPOULOS - HAIDARANGA MEETING IN THESSALONIKIWeb Posted: 15:57 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 27/06/1998 (MPA) The ministers of defense of Greece and Albania Akis Tsochatzopoulos and Luan Haidaranga met in Thessaloniki today. The two ministers discussed the crisis in Kosovo, bilateral relations and especially the cooperation between the two ministries. The talks were followed by a formal dinner given in honor of the Albanian delegation.The solution for Kosovo can be only a political one that can be reached through diplomatic means, stressed Mr. Tsochatzopoulos, and Mr. Haidaranga agreed leaving open the likelihood of a military solution saying that if the diplomatic means fail then a military intervention will be unavoidable. Both ministers stressed that pressures should be exerted for a peaceful solution and the Greek minister of defense called on Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic to open an unconditional dialogue with the leaders of the ethnic Albanians in Kosovo. Referring to those who are hidden behind the alleged liberation army Mr. Tsochatzopoulos stated that with their activities undermine the efforts for a political solution. Commenting on last night's speech by US presidential envoy Richard Halbrooke in Athens, Mr. Tsochatzopoulos stressed that he was impressed by the strong dose of self-criticism for the stance of the US in the period of the dictatorship in Greece and the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. He also said that Mr. Halbrooke's speculations on the dangers in Kosovo are realistic and for this reason the Greek government supports a political solution in every way. The two ministers characterized as excellent the relations of the Greek and the Albanian ministries of defense and underlined that the Albanian Parliament voted to extend the presence of the Greek military force in Tirana until August. [B] BALKANS[06] PRESIDENT STEPHANOPOULOS CONTINUES HIS VISIT TO CYPRUSWeb Posted: 15:57 GMT+2Nicosia, 27/06/1998 (MPA) The view that there can be no normalization of the Greek-Turkish relations if the Cyprus issue is not resolved, was expressed by Greek president Kostis Stephanopoulos speaking in the Cypriot Parliament.Mr. Stephanopoulos stressed that his visit to Cyprus is not a usual diplomatic visit by a head of state but it is a message of determination and unity of hearts. Referring to Ankara, president Stephanopoulos called on the Turks to have no delusions over Cyprus's EU accession course. President Stephanopoulos also visited the headquarters of the National Guard and was briefed on the course toward the materialization of the joint defense doctrine, the operational readiness of the National Guard as well as, on the state of the Turkish occupation forces in the northern part of the island. In statements he made he stressed that neither Greece nor Cyprus have aggressive intentions toward anyone but they are determined to fight for their rights, integrity and dignity. He also called on the foreign powers to stop the hypocricy regarding the defense armaments of Cyprus pointing out that they are those who arm Turkey.
