    [01] MERRILL LYNCH SUGGESTS TO INVESTORS TO BUY OTE SHARES

    Thessaloniki, 17/10/1998 (MPA) The brokerage firm Merrill Lynch turns the attention of international investors to the shares of the Greek Telecommunications Company (OTE), the National Bank of Greece and Ergo Bank.

    Also, according to the international news agency Reuters, Merrill Lynch suggests that a neutral stance should be adopted toward the shares of Alpha Credit Bank and the Greek Bottling Company.

    [02] GAINS RECORDED IN THE INTERNATIONAL STOCK MARKETS

    Athens , 17/10/1998 (MPA) Gains were recorded in the international stock markets after the United States Central Bank decision to ease its monetary policy and cut the interest rates.

    The situation has improved in the European stock markets as well, while impressive gains were recorded in the Athens Stock Exchange where the general price index closed at 6.37% with weekly earnings of 15.4%. The Wall Street closed with a 1.4% rise, while the value of the US dollar dropped toward the DM and the Japanese yen.

    Greek minister of national economy and finance Yiannos Papantoniou stated that the effort made internationally to deal with the global economic crisis appears to be effective.

    [03] THE DECISIONS ON THE 1999 BUDGET WILL BE MADE ON FRIDAY

    Athens, 17.10.1998 (MPA) The final decisions on the 1999 budget will be made on Friday in the governmental committee meeting.

    As it was pointed out during yesterday's meeting of prime minister Kostas Simitis with minister of national economy and finance Yiannos Papantoniou, the government's priority is to curb inflation and to this end it will continue to impose the same economic policy. However, the direct and indirect taxes will be "frozen", the public services rates will be reduced, while the food and household items prices will remain "frozen" for at least 6 more months.

    [04] THE SECOND ROUND OF LOCAL ELECTIONS TAKES PLACE TOMORROW

    Thessaloniki , 17.10.1998 (MPA) The second round of local administration elections in Greece takes place tomorrow. The two main political parties focus their attention on the municipalities of Thessaloniki and Pireaus and the prefectures of Thessaloniki and Attica.

    Meanwhile, consultations continue aimed at securing enough support for the candidates in the second round. The election results will depend on the voters of candidates who were excluded from the second round of elections last Sunday.

    Greek government spokesman Dimitris Reppas expressed the certainty that elections will be held without problems.

    [05] PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS WILL BE HELD IN FYROM TOMORROW

    Skopje, 17/10/1998 (MPA) The third parliamentary elections since the declaration of FYROM's independence will be held in the country tomorrow.

    Thirty political parties and coalitions will compete for the 120 seats in Parliament. The registered voters are 1.572.976 and the elections will be held based on the mixed election system that was voted by parliament earlier this year.

    Based on the newly adopted election system, 85 of the seats will be distributed according to the majority system and the rest 35 according to the proportional system.
