    [01] THE MAYOR OF ELBASAN IS ON A VISIT TO THESSALONIKI

    Thessaloniki, 28/11/1998 (MPA) The city council of the Albanian city of Elbasan, headed by mayor Eggel Dakli, visited the municipality of Neapolis yesterday, which is neighboring to the municipality of Thessaloniki.

    In the meeting were discussed issues of organization and local administration. The Albanian delegation stated that the main problem is fund raising and showed a special interest in municipal companies and their operation, while they suggested the establishment of closer relations between the two municipalities in the cultural sector.

    [02] GOLD PRIZE FROM BRUSSELS TO THE CITY OF NAOUSA

    Veria, 28/11/1998 (MPA) The municipality of Naousa delegation has returned from Brussels where it received the Gold European Prize for Urban and Regional Planning awarded to the north-western Greek city for the "Management of St. Nikolaos Grove" project.

    As it was made known, printed information material translated into 11 languages with many references to the city of Naousa will be distributed to the 600 mayors that will participate in the special forum on urban planning that will be held in Vienna next week.

    [03] NEW WAVE OF BAD WEATHER HITS NORTHERN GREECE

    Thessaloniki, 28/11/1998 (MPA) The responsible agencies are in a state of preparedness in the wider region of Thessaloniki to deal with emergencies as a result of the new wave of bad weather that hits northern Greece since this morning with heavy rainfall and strong gusty winds.

    According to the emergency services, the very strong winds can uproot trees even bus tops, while many areas of the city have been flooded due to the heavy rain.

    [04] MS. PAPANDREOU IS ON A FOUR-DAY VISIT TO IRAN

    Athens, 28/11/1998 (MPA) Minister of development Ms. Vaso Papandreou is on a four-day formal visit to Iran for the promotion of bilateral trade and economic ties and the strengthening of political relations between Greece and Iran.

    Ms. Papandreou, in an interview with the Iranian News Agency, stressed that her visit to Teheran aims at the further improvement of cooperation between the two countries and among the issues for discussion will be the establishment of joint petrol companies in the Balkans. The minister is accompanied to Iran by 22 businessmen and 13 journalists.

    [05] TSOVOLAS LAUNCHED AN ATTACK AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT

    Thessaloniki, 28/11/1998 (MPA) Leader of the opposition party of Democratic Social Movement Dimitris Tsovolas launched an attack against the government in his speech delivered in the special session of the party's Central Political Committee that is being held in Thessaloniki.

    Mr. Tsovolas stated that the country suffers from a democratic deficit and stressed that Greece will not be able to join the EMU. He also accused the two main political parties in Greece of launching a slander campaign against his party and maintained that both parties will receive a slap in the face in the European parliament elections and in the next state parliamentary elections.

    [06] THE NEW STRIKE OF THE CUSTOMS EMPLOYEES WILL START ON MONDAY

    Athens, 28/11/1998 (MPA) The customs employees will start their new strike action on Monday and as a result problems are expected next week in the supply and distribution of fuel.

    The ministry of finance appealed to the courts hoping that they will rule against the strike characterizing it as illegal and the decision is expected on Tuesday.

    The customs employees will be on rotating five-day strikes demanding that their social security fund be excluded from the unification with other 11 funds as it is provided by the proposed mini social security bill.

    [07] THE PAPADIMOS REPORT ON THE GREEK ECONOMY

    Athens, 28/11/1998 (MPA) Efforts must continue for the further drop of inflation to 2% by the end of 1999, stated Bank of Greece governor Mr. Loukas Papadimos speculating that in the first half of the new year inflation will drop significantly.

    In his biannual report to parliament, Mr. Papadimos also speculated that in the following weeks the interest rates in the inter-bank market will be reduced.

    [08] TURKEY IS STILL WITHOUT A GOVERNMENT

    Ankara, 28/11/1998 (MPA) The consultations of Turkish president Suleiman Demirel with the leaders of the six largest political parties, held within the framework of the efforts to form a new government, have been completed.

    Based on the Constitution, if no government can be formed with the cooperation of the largest political parties in parliament the president is obligated to appoint a caretaker government.
