    [01] THE UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE EXAMS CONTINUED TODAY

    Thessaloniki, 03.07.1999 (MPA) The university entrance exams continued for a third day today and students were tested in chemistry and ancient Greek. According to official data provided by the ministry of education, 11.613 students, about 13.39%, will not move up to the next class.

    In Thessaloniki, the percentage of the students who have failed in the exams is 2% higher compared to the average in the rest of the country, namely, of the 8.229 students tested 1.288 (15.65%) will not move up to the next class.

    [02] MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR THE 7 SOLDIERS KILLED IN YESTERDAY'S TRAFFIC ACCIDENT

    Thessaloniki, 03.07.1999 (MPA) A memorial service for the 7 soldiers killed in yesterday's traffic accident near the village of Kavalari, on the national road linking Thessaloniki with Kavala, will be held tomorrow in the village's church of the Saints of Konstantinos and Eleni after a decision made by the General Army Staff.

    At the same time, in a display of mourning all events scheduled to be held in army units and officers' clubs have been postponed. Minister of defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos confirmed that measures have been taken to determine the exact causes of the accident.

    [03] RUSSIAN OFFICERS ARRIVED IN THESSALONIKI

    Thessaloniki, 03.07.1999 (MPA) Five Russian officers arrived in Thessaloniki yesterday headed by a brigadier. They inspected the facilities that will be used by the Russian soldiers who will pass through Thessaloniki, while they also had contacts with Greek and NATO chiefs of staff.

    According to a statement by a spokesman of the National Defense General Staff, the Greek foreign ministry has already given its approval to the passing of Russian soldiers through Thessaloniki on their way to Kossovo.

    [04] THE ISSUING OF A GREEN CARD TO FOREIGNERS WILL BE RECONSIDERED

    Athens, 03.07.1999 (MPA) The cabinet discussed yesterday the issue of the green card which allows foreigners to live and work in Greece.

    Minister of public order Michalis Chrisohoidis will visit Albania and FYROM to discuss with his counterparts ways for the better guarding of the borders.

    Meanwhile, the government decided to reinforce the guarding of the borders with 1.500 men, while the police operations for the deportation of illegal immigrants will be intensified.

    Greek foreign minister Giorgos Papandreou announced that the efforts to counter illegal immigrants will be made in cooperation with the neighboring countries.

    [05] ERNK: THE ARSONS IN GERMANY ARE PROVOCATIONS ATTEMPTING TO OVERSHADOW THE REACTIONS OF THE KURDISH PEOPLE

    Athens, 03.07.1999 (MPA) The National Liberation Front of Kurdistan (ERNK) characterized as provocation the arson attacks reported in Germany after the announcement by the Turkish State Security Court that the death sentence was imposed on Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan. The ERNK stated that the attacks were made by circles that seek to overshadow the democratic reactions and the legal and fair demands of the Kurdish people.

    In the statement issued by ERNK it is also mentioned that the Kurdish people will continue its struggle in an organized and civilized manner, while an appeal was made to the Kurds living in European countries to continue their civilized behavior and block every provocative acts.

    [06] YUGOSLAVIA WANTS TO HAVE A MILITARY PRESENCE IN KOSOVO

    Belgrade, 03.07.1999 (MPA) Yugoslav foreign minister Zivadin Jovanovic appealed to the United Nations to allow Yugoslav forces inside Kossovo, stressing that the situation in the Serb province continues to be unsettled.

    Meanwhile, US officials allege that Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic prepares a coup to overthrow the government in Montenegro.

    [07] A YOUNG GREEK WAS DECLARED FIRST YOUNG CITIZEN IN VICTORIA

    Melbourne, 03.07.1999 (MPA) Greek-Australian mechanical engineering and physics student in the University of Melbourne, Giorgos Doukas was declared first young citizen of the Australian state of Victoria for the year 1999. The announcement was made in a special ceremony by prime minister of the state of Victoria, Jeff Kennett.

    The distinction received by the young Greek is being given to young citizens who excel in the sector of sciences and are known for the services they offer to society as a whole.

    Giorgos Doukas has also received the first prize in IBM's math competition, the first prize in the Australian bank WESTRAC physics competition and the gold metal in the Chemistry Olympiad in Sontmurt, Canada in 1997.
