[02] GREEK DEFENSE MINISTER: NATIONAL CLEANSING HAS TO STOP

    Web Posted: 19:27 GMT+2
Thessaloniki, 15/08/1999 (MPA) Greece's Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, who attended the celebration of the

Dormition of the Virgin held at the Panagia Soumela Monastery today, stated that the "ethnic cleansing" being perpetrated against the Serbs who have remained in Kosovo has to stop, while also referring to the Cypriot refugees who were forced to leave their homes in the wake of the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus as "victims of ethnic cleansing".

Mr. Tsochatzopoulos called on international organizations to intervene "decisively" so that the Greek-Cypriots can return to the now Turkish- occupied northern part of the island.

He further added that the Greeks of the Black Sea region were "the first in our history" to suffer the consequences of ethnic cleansing (at the hands of the Turks) and for this reason "Greece is obliged and has an inalienable right to support all the struggles against all policies of ethnic cleansing".

Referring to the Kosovo problem, the Defense Minister said that while Greece

has already stated its opposition to the ethnic cleansing carried out against Albanians, " we now demand an end to the policy of ethnic cleansing being perpetrated by the Albanians against the Serbs".

In an address he gave at the island of Samos yesterday, President Stephanopoulos stated that the only avenue that Turkey should follow is the observance of international treaties and accords, and to seek recourse with the International Court of Justice at The Hague.
