    NEWS IN DETAILS

    [A] NATIONAL NEWS

  • [01] 17N TRIAL: THIRTEEN LAWYERS THREATEN WITH A THREE-DAY ABSTENTION Thirteen of the defendants' lawyers threaten with a three-day abstention from the terrorist group "17 November" trial proceedings. They justified their protest maintaining that it is made in reaction to the procedure followed to extend the detention time

of one of the defendants, Anestis Papanastasiou.

The defense lawyers maintain that the temporary detention order for defendant Papanastasiou was renewed in spite of the fact that the deadline set by law for such a decision had expired. They insist that according to the law, the prosecutor had to order the release of Papanastasiou.

They want the prosecutor in the 17N trial to face the penalties provided by law accusing him of committing an unexpected false move when he ordered the renewal of the defendant's temporary detention.

  • [02] PROTOPAPAS: TERRORIST ATTACKS ARE UNACCEPTABLE Greek government spokesman Christos Protopapas categorically condemned the latest terrorist attacks both in Iraq and in Palestine characterizing them as unacceptable.

Violence does not solve problems and does not help in the efforts for peace. On the contrary, intensifies and reproduces the problems, underlined Mr. Protopapas, adding that everybody should contribute to the peaceful settlement of the problems through t he international community.

  • [03] LEFKADA: STRONG AFTERSHOCK A strong aftershock measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale shook the Ionian Sea island of Lefkada at 3.34am today. Another equally strong aftershock rocked the island yesterday.

Seismologists believe that the aftershocks are a natural phenomenon after the powerful earthquake of 6.4 on the Richter scale that was recorded last Thursday.

According to the results of the inspections made on the buildings, a total of 951 were found to be temporarily unsafe, while over 160 families have been left homeless.

  • [04] LOVERDOS ON THE EVENT HELD IN FLORINA BY POLITICAL REFUGEES FROM FYROM It is a private event and it should not scare anyone, while there should be no exaggerations concerning the number of the people that will attend, commented Greek Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Andreas Loverdos. The comments were made on the occasion of an event that will take place near the city of Florina, northwestern Greece, this evening with the participation of political refugees from FYROM.

He observed that neither the FYROM government nor the Greek authorities will be present.

Speaking in the radio station "Alpha Radio", Mr. Loverdos reminded that a similar event took place in 1999. He stated that the humanitarian measure adopted recently by Greece, allowing political refugees living in FYROM to visit Greece for a specific per iod of time, was not in effect then.

Mr. Loverdos said that the number of people that will attend the event is not an issue for concern, stressing that what is important is the messages that will be sent out during the event.

Responding to a question on the form of the event, he pointed out that it is organized by a so-called Committee for the Reception of Political Refugees made up of people close to "Uranio Toxo".

On Greece's relations with FYROM, he said that the Greek government and the government of FYROM for a long time now share a specific quality in their relations and the Summit Meeting in Chalkidiki was the culmination for a number of efforts made by Greec e.

  • [05] INVITATION BY THE FINANCE MINISTER FOR INVESTMENTS IN CRETE An invitation to exploit the incentives offered by the new development law for investments with capital coming from abroad, was issued by Greek Finance Minister Nikos Christodoulakis to the Cretans living abroad. The invitation was issued by the Finance Minister during the formal opening of the proceedings of the Conference of the Cretans Living Abroad which is broadcast live by MPA.

He also suggested the establishment of a co mmunication channel between scientists and young Cretans on the Internet to exchange views and experiences and to promote the advantages of Crete.

In his speech, Mr. Christodoulakis pointed out that Greece has made significant progress and has become a factor of peace and prosperity in the Balkans and the wider Mediterranean region.

  • [07] THE PRESENCE OF YOUNG CRETANS A special character to the Conference of Cretans living abroad, taking place at Kolibari, Chania in the island of Crete hosted by the Orthodox Academy of Chania, is given by the young Cretans who hold their own meetings and prepare their own activities.

The meetings of the World Council of Young Cretans have already started and in the preliminary meeting held at Kolibari, Chania three resolutions were adopted on the development of volunteerism, the international village of young Cretans and Hellenism to day.

Specifically, the resolution on the last issue underlines that this is a very challenging time for Hellenism, stressing that the challenges are specific and therefore, the decisions and actions taken should also be specific. In the resolution it is also stressed that all the Greeks living abroad can and should contribute to the promotion of national interests by informing the international public opinion and becoming the ambassadors of Hellenism around the world.
