  • [01] MONUMENT FOR THE GREEK JEWS KILLED IN THE 1940 WAR A monument dedicated to the Greek Jew soldiers killed in WWII, was unveiled today by Greek President Kostis Stephanopoulos in the presence of Defense Minister Yiannos Papantoniou. The monument was erected at the Jewish Cemetery in Thessaloniki in front o f the grave of Mardocheos Frizis, the first Jewish officer who was killed in battle while fighting for Greece in the 1940 war during WWII.

    Thessaloniki's Jewish Community President David Saltiel speaking during the ceremony pointed out that a total of 12.898 Greek Jews, 343 of whom were officers, fought at the frontline in the 1940 war. A total of 513 Jews were killed fighting for Greece, w hile 5.743 were wounded. Also, two Greek regiments, the 50th and the 63rd, were made up almost entirely of Jews from Thessaloniki and other cities in Macedonia, northern Greece.

  • [02] SMALL GAINS IN THE ASE Small gains were recorded in the Athens Stock Exchange today. The general index rose to +0.50% at 2.112,53 points, while the volume of transactions was very small at 81 million euros.

    Of the stocks trading today, 148 recorded losses and 140 had gains, while the value of 93 stocks remained unchanged.

  • [03] KARAMANLIS: THE OCTOBER 28TH ANNIVERSARY IS ONE OF THE MOST GLORIOUS CHAPTERS OF THE GREEK HISTORY Greece's historical challenge to fight for a prosperous and safe Europe for all as it was dictated by the country's history and civilization, was underlined by right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy President Kostas Karamanlis in his message o n the occasion of the October 28th anniversary when Greece was attacked by Fascist Italy and was forced to enter WWII.

    Mr. Karamanlis points out in his message that October 28, 1940 marked the beginning of one of the most glorious chapters of the Greek history and proved that the ideals of national independence, freedom and dignity are non negotiable and cannot be compro mised. At the same time, he underlines that Greece's contribution was not proportional to the size of the country but to the virtues and morale of the Greeks.

  • [04] THE GREEK PRESIDENT INAUGURATED A WAR PRESS EXHIBITION An exhibition of newspapers and printed material published in the period of 1940-41, was inaugurated by Greek President Kostis Stephanopoulos today. The exhibition is held in the War Museum-Thessaloniki Branch and the inauguration took place in the prese nce of Defense Minister Yiannos Papantoniou.

    The exhibition is organized within the framework of the events on the occasion of the October 28th anniversary.

    Among others the exhibition includes issues of the newspapers "Nea Alithia", "Athinaika Nea", "Ethnos", "Asirmatos", "Elefthero Vima", "O Tipos", "Niki", "Proinos Tipos", "Vradini", "Proia", "Akropolis", and "To Fos".

  • [05] THEODOROS PANGALOS' ROLE IN THE PRE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN Governing Socialist Party of PASOK Central Committee Secretary Michalis Chrisochoidis met at the party's central offices in Athens today with former government minister Theodoros Pangalos.

    The meeting lasted for about an hour and according to information, it was held in a very good atmosphere. Mr. Pangalos is expected to assume a central role in view of the pre-election campaign.

    According to information, PASOK's Secretary is expected to make statements on Thursday on the party's election program and the reactivation of senior party members.

  • [06] PRESIDENT STEPHANOPOULOS: A TRUE PATRIOT ACTS HAVING IN MIND THE GENERAL GOOD National anniversaries should remind us of the great historic events and our obligations as citizens, pointed out Greek President Kostis Stephanopoulos speaking in the formal reception that was given by the 3rd Army Corps Command in Thessaloniki on the o ccasion of the October 28, 1940 anniversary, when Greece was attacked by fascist Italy and was forced to enter WWII.

    President Stephanopoulos referred extensively to the true patriots saying that in times of peace they struggle for the country's prosperity and progress, while he characterized as bad patriots those who are responsible for delaying the country's progress .
