NEWS IN DETAIL[01] PREMIER TO TOUR THESSALY REGION THIS WEEKENDAthens, February 27 (MPA)The Prime Minister Kostas Simitis, heading a ministerial delegation, is to conduct a three-day tour throughout Greece's central region of Thessaly, beginning on Saturday.Mr. Simitis will visit a military camp on Saturday and in turn will visit local authorities in Thessaly and will address a rally in the evening. [02] GREEK FOREIGN MINISTER USES STERN LANGUAGE TOWARDS TURKEYAthens, February 27 (MPA)Greece's Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos used stern language towards Turkey over its continued provocations against Greece and also directed his wrath towards European Union member- states for their aggressive stance towards Cyprus.Mr. Pangalos characterized the stance adopted by France, Britain and Germany as insensible and ludicrous and warned that for as long as there is this entanglement in the negotiations of Cyprus's accession to the EU, Greece will present a series of obstacles to the community's expansion. [03] NATO SECRETARY-GENERAL JAVIER SOLANA TO VISIT ATHENS TOMORROWAthens, February 27 (MPA)In light of tomorrow's visit to Athens by NATO's Secretary- General Javier Solana, a conference was chaired this afternoon by Prime Minister Kostas Simitis, attended by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and National Defense, Theodoros Pangalos and Akis Tsochatzopoulos, respectively, as well as Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Yiannos Kranidiotis.Msgrs. Pangalos, Tsochatzopoulos and Solana will look into ways of reducing the tension in the Aegean and will also examine issues related to the Alliance's new structure. According to reports, the NATO Secretary-General is to bear proposals for lessening tensions in the Aegean, as well as for the matter created after France's Britain's and Germany's wish to involve the Turkish-Cypriots into the negotiations regarding Cyprus' accession to the European Union. [04] SUPREME COURT JUSTICE IN THESSALONIKI TO LOOK INTO CULTURAL CAPITAL OF EUROPE ORGANIZATION'S FINANCESThessaloniki, February 27 (MPA)The Board of Directors of the "Thessaloniki, Cultural Capital of Europe '97" Organization has presented a series of measures that will lead to an improvement of the organization's communications and promotions as well as grant a dose of transparency in its financial matters.Meanwhile, the vice-chairman of the country's Supreme Court is to arrive in Thessaloniki tomorrow in order to look into the investigations currently conducted regarding the organizations' financial handlings. [05] EDUCATION MINISTER TO MEET WITH TEACHERS NATIONAL UNION TODAYAthens, February 27 (MPA)Education Minister Gerasimos Arsenis is to meet with the teachers national union (OLME) today.During a press conference held yesterday, Mr. Arsenis promised that 3,000 unemployed teachers will be assigned to classrooms within the year and also vowed to fulfil all of their education-related demands. Prime Minister Kostas Simitis warned that the government will proceed to measures if a solution to the teachers' six-week long strike is not found soon. A.F. [06] BELGRADE'S MAYOR ZORAN DJINDJIC WILL COME TO ATHENS IN MARCHBelgrade, February 27 (MPA)Belgrade's new mayor Zoran Djindjic, one of the tri-partite opposition's "Zajedno" leaders, is to visit Athens in March, on the invitation on Greece's main opposition leader Miltiades Evert and Athens Mayor Dimitris Avramopoulos.The two mayors will aim to strengthen cooperation between the two municipalities. Mr. Djindjic is expected to ask Mr. Avramopoulos to grant Belgrade with aid in addressing its transportation problems. A.F. [07] GREEK ALTERNATE FOREIGN MINISTER IN ROMEAthens, February 27 (MPA)Greece's alternate Foreign Minister George Papandreou is currently in Rome where he is to meet with the Italian government's Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs P. Fassino.The two officials are to discuss the process of the Intergovernmental Conference and bilateral issues. A.F. [08] U.S. INITIATIVE ON CYPRUS DELAYED DUE TO NICOSIA'S MISSILES PURCHASENicosia, February 27 (MPA)The United States initiative over the Cyprus issue is delayed due to Nicosia's decision to purchase anti-aircraft missiles from Russia, stated Carey Cavanaugh, Director of the Office of Southeastern European Affairs at the U.S. State Department.Mr. Cavanaugh, along with State Department spokesperson Nicholas Burns, avoided expressing any criticism of Turkey's continuous violations of Cyprus' FIR. The U.S. official merely emphasized that these flights do not contribute to the island's security and intensify tensions. A.F. [09] BULGARIA: CABINET CLEAN UP TO START, FORMER PREMIER ABOUT TO BE ARRESTEDSofia, February 27 (MPA)Sofia's daily "Standart" reports that Bulgaria's former Prime Minister Jean Videnov is about to be arrested, being held responsible for tthe country's lack of grain which has avalanched into a serious economic crisis for the country.The article also quotes the Minister of Interior and Public Order Boyomil Bonev who directly accuses Videnov. "The former Premier had no idea of the grain balance-sheets," Mr. Bonev said, adding that "we arrived at this assessment from the orders that he himself signed for grain export." On the following Tuesday, the state's investigative committee is to meet to discuss the issue of the number of politicians who are forbidden from exiting the country. Meanwhile, the economic crisis in Bulgaria continues to mount with a galloping inflation that has reached the 100 percent mark. A.F.
