NEWS IN DETAIL[01] RELATIVES OF YAKOVLEV’S VICTIMS SEEK RECOURSE WITH THESSALONIKI’S COURTThessaloniki, February 9 (MPA)Thessaloniki’s First Instance Court is to hear today the petition for the confiscation of Ukraine’s Aerosweet airlines assets in Greece, filed by the relatives of the victims of the crashed Ukrainian airliner who claim that the company is responsible for the death of the passengers and crew.Ever since the petition was filed 14 days ago, one of the airline’s Boeing 737 aircraft has remained grounded at Thessaloniki’s “Makedonia” Airport. The confiscation petition was submitted by an attorney representing the family of a young teacher, Triada Karafiloudi, who was killed when the Russian-made Yakovlev-42 airplane crashed into the Pieria mountain range in northern Greece on December 17, killing all 74 passengers and crew on board. [02] FARMERS INTENSIFY PROTESTS AROUND GREECE, WILL BLOCK OFF HIGHWAYThessaloniki, February 9 (MPA)Farmers in central Greece protesting the government's agricultural policy, are to block off a section of the national highway for a three-hour period today at the Biokarpet junction.Their representatives, known as the pan-Thessaly coordinating committee, are demanding that a government delegation travel to the region in order to discus their demands. Meanwhile, farmers in the Peloponnese are continuing the blockade of the Kalamata - Tripoli national highway. [03] MORE FLOODS DEVASTATE EVROS, EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO CULTIVATED LANDThessaloniki, February 9 (MPA)Another 700 hectares flooded yesterday at the village of Fylakto in Evros, as the river banks caved in.Local authorities are stressing that the necessary measures have been taken so that lives will not be endangered. Meanwhile, a 28-year-old hunter who was drawn into the river has yet to be found. The emergency plan “Xenokratis”, used in case of natural disasters, is in effect while the damages caused in the region by the bad weather are extensive. [04] MINISTER OF MACEDONIA-THRACE, UNDERSECRETARY OF AGRICULTURE IN EVROSAlexandroupolis, February 9 (MPA)The Minister of Macedonia-Thrace Philippos Petsalnikos and the Undersecretary of Agriculture Vasilis Geranides are currently visiting the flooded regions of Evros.Mr. Petsalnikos is to chair a session with various agencies, in order to examine the situation at hand after the extensive damages caused by the floods. [05] ALTERNATE FOREIGN MINISTER IN JAPAN, MEETS WITH IOC MEMBERSAthens, February 9 (MPA)Greece’s Alternate Foreign Minister George Papandreou held talks with International Olympic Committee (IOC) member S. Kintane in Nagano, Japan, on Saturday, who is the responsible coordinator of the IOC with the UN on the issue of the Olympic Truce.Mgrs. Kintane and Papandreou discussed the following steps to be taken towards implementing the Greek government's initiative on the Olympic Truce. Mr. Papandreou also had a meeting with Ms. Judy Williams, who holds the Nobel peace prize for her campaign to have mines banned, whom he briefed on the Olympic Truce issue. [06] SAE WILL ORGANIZE COLLECTION OF FUNDS FOR MEDICAL CENTERSThessaloniki, February 9 (MPA)The Council of Greeks Abroad (SAE) is to organize a world fund collection in May to enable Greek expatriates to contribute with funds towards the building of Greek medical centers in regions of the former Soviet Union where Greeks live.The first Greek clinic has already been established and is functioning in Tbilisi, Georgia, with funds collected by SAE. The Council's target is to establish a total of 11 clinics in Black Sea regions. The collection to build clinics is part of the activities which were decided upon over the weekend by SAE during the first regular meeting of its nine-member presidium at its permanent headquarters in Thessaloniki. The participants also drew a series of action plans aimed at expatriate Greeks contributing towards the Athens 2004 Olympiad. Greece’s Minister of Culture Evangelos Venizelos appealed to expatriate Greek businessmen and investors to participate in preparation projects in Athens, and the country in general, on the major sports event, stressing the need for the mobilization of the seven million Greek expatriates, whose participation alone will provide absolute success for the event. Referring to the Young Expatriates' Olympiad, Mr. Venizelos said the government's aim is to make it a permanent institution headquarters in Thessaloniki. [07] PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS HELD IN CYPRUS YESTERDAY, IAKOVOU, CLERIDES AT TOPNicosia, February 9 (MPA)The first round of the presidential elections in Cyprus was held yesterday, with former Foreign Minister George Iakovou having gathered 40.6% of the votes, while incumbent President Glafkos Clerides gathered 40.06%. The two will vie for the top seat during Sunday’s second round.Mr. Iakovou gathered 160,918 votes, while President Clerides gathered 158,763. Former Speaker of the House and current present of EDEK Vassos Lyssarides, received 41,978 votes,10,59%,; Alexis Galanos, former vice-president of DIKO and former Speaker of the House 16,003, 4,04%; former president of the republic George Vasiliou, who is the leader of the United Democrats Party, 11.908, 3%, Nikos Koutsou, president of the New Horizons Party 3.625, 0,91%. Nikos Rolandis, former Foreign Minster and President of the Liberals Party; 3.104 votes, 0,78%. The registered voters were 446,732 of whom 396,299 voted. Mr. Clerides has vowed that he will form a government of national unity, while Mr. Iakovou stated that the majority of the Cypriots have expressed their disapproval of the Clerides government. [08] TURKISH BOAT THAT RAN AGROUND NEAR CORFU HAS BEEN REMOVEDCorfu, February 9 (MPA)In an operation conducted late last night off the coast of Corfu, the Turkish cargo ship that had ran aground was removed.The ship, carrying a cargo of magnesium, ran aground on Friday on a rock islet southeast of Corfu. Greek ships towed the cargo ship to the port of Corfu where its damages were repaired. [09] PRESIDENT OF ALBANIA TO EMBARK ON OFFICIAL VISIT TO TURKEYTirana, February 9 (MPA)The President of Albania Reijep Meidani is to embark on a three-day official visit to Turkey on February 11.President Meidani will be accompanied by the Albanian government’s vice-president Bashkim Fino, and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Economy-Privatization. During his stay in Turkey, the Albanian President will meet with his Turkish counterpart Suleiman Demirel, the vice-president of the Turkish government Bulent Ecevit, the Speaker of the House, the Foreign Minister and the Chief of the General Army Staff.
