NEWS IN DETAIL[01] GOVERNMENT DECLARES STATE OF EMERGENCY FOR MANY BURNING REGIONSAthens, August & (MPA)The Greek government placed the region of Mount Penteli in a state of emergency yesterday and, while fires in that region have subsided, infernos in the Peloponnese, Halkidiki and the main land continue to ravage hundreds of acres of land. The Minster of the Interior Alekos Papadopoulos said that additional measures are to be taken in combating the fires and preventing arson since more fires are expected in August. The Civil Aviation Agency has provided airplanes and pilots to assist in fighting the infernos. [02] GREECE TO PLAY AGAINST SPAIN IN TONIGHT’S GAME OF WORLDBASKET ’98Athens, August 7 (MPA)Greece will play against Spain during tonight’s game of the ongoing WorldBasket '98 championship in Athens, having finished third in Group E. The Greek team yesterday was beat by Yugoslavia, the score being 70-56. If Greece manages to beat Spain, then it will face the winner of the Yugoslavia-Argentina match. The Championships are being held at the capital’s Peace and Friendship stadium.[03] US ISSUE STERN WARNING TO SLOBODAN MILOSEVICWashington, August 7 (MPA)The United States have issued another stern warning to Serb President Slobodan Milosevic concerning the ongoing conflict in Kossovo.The State Department announced that preparations for NATO’s military intervention in the region could be complete in a day or two. [04] FIRES CONTINUE TO RAGE THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRYAthens, August 7 (MPA)Huge fires continue to rage throughout the country, with thousands of acres of forest land having turned to ash. The Civil Aviation Agency has provided airplanes and pilots to assist in fighting the infernos. Meanwhile, the larger part of the Peloponnese peninsula has been declared as an emergency state. Fires broke out on the outskirts of Patras and in the prefecture of Ilia. Fires continue to engulf hundreds of acres on Mount Olympus, while blazes have subsided in the ecologically unique forest of Mount Taygetos in Messinia.[05] STATE DEPARTMENT TO CONVENE OVER CYPRUS, GREEK-TURKISH ISSUESWashington, August 7 (MPA)The US State Department is to hold a wide-spanning conference today concerning the Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus issue.The meeting, to be chaired by Secretary of State Madleine Albright, will feature the participation of US Ambassadors assigned to Athens, Ankara and Nicosia. Meanwhile, US President Bill Clinton has announced the stay of envoys Richard Holbrooke and Thomas Miller as US mediators for the Cyprus issue. [06] DEPUTY FOREIGN MINISTER TO MEET WITH CYPRIOT PRESIDENT TODAYAthens, August 7 (MPA)Greece’s deputy Foreign Minister Yiannos Kranidiotis is to exchange points of view on the Cyprus issue with the President of the Republic of Cyprus Glafkos Clerides during their meeting in Nicosia today. Mr. Kranidiotis is to discuss the US proposals for a flight moratorium over the island.Also present at the Clerides-Kranidiotis meeting will be the Cypriot Foreign Minister Yannakis Kasoulides. [07] GREECE, ALBANIA TO SIGN COOPERATION PROTOCOL ON MONDAYAthens, August 7 (MPA)A cooperation protocol is to be signed on Monday between Greece and Albania, foreseeing joint patrols along the two countries’ common sea border. The protocol is aimed at policing the region more effectively, such as combating illegal immigration, drug trafficking and unlawful fishing. A special ceremony will be held at the island of Corfu on Monday, which will be attended by Merchant Marine Minister Stavros Soumakis and Albanian Interior Minister Neritan Ceka.[08] FAYUM’S PORTRAITS COLLECTION PRESENTED AT THESSALONIKI’S MUSEUMThessaloniki, August 7 (MPA)The famous series of Fayum’s portraits is currently on display at Thessaloniki’s Museum of Byzantine Civilization.The portraits, dating back to the 1st and 4th centuries A.D. are characterized by an intense realism, the artist having employed a method that wavers between impressionism and naturalism. The exhibit will last until the end of August. [09] ALBANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER TALKS TO THE MPA ABOUT KOSSOVO CRISISTirana, August 7 (MPA)Albanian Foreign Minister Paskal Milo expressed his concern over the fermenting Kossovo crisis tot he Macedonian Press Agency. Mr. Milo stated that his government is carefully observing the developments in the region , especially Serb President Slobodan Milosevic’s actions in Kossovo sand the Albanian-Yugoslav borders. According to Mr. Milo, the Albanians are aware of Mr. Milosevic’s tactics and believe that the Serb President’s aim is to intensify military activity during the weekends, when the international community is not keeping such a close watch on the region.[10] DEPUTY FOREIGN MINISTER MEETS WITH CYPRIOT FOREIGN MINISTERNicosia, August 7 (MPA)Athens and Nicosia have similar reactions to their negotiations with the United States, stated the Cypriot Foreign Minster Yiannakis Kasoulides following his meeting with Greek deputy Foreign Minister Yiannos Kranidiotis in Nicosia.
