[01] BEER AGAINST HEART DISEASE

The moderate daily consumption of beer can contribute to lowering the risk of developing a heart disease, according to the results of a research published yesterday by the British medical Review.

The research was conducted in the Czech Republic by Martin Babak of the University of London and showed that those who consume one litre of beer once a day or every other day face a smaller risk to develop a heart attack stressing, however, that the positive effect disappears for those who drink twice a day or more.

[02] THE PASSENGERS OF THE CYPRIOT CRUISE-SHIP ARE IN NO DANGER

Over 40 passengers on board the under Cypriot flag cruise-ship "Sea Serenate", who developed gastroenteritis symptoms during their return trip from a cruise in the Middle East, are in no danger.

The symptoms first appeared in some of the passengers on Tuesday morning as the cruise-ship was sailing to Greece. The crew treated the patients until Thursday afternoon when the ship arrived at the port of Piraeus.

The patients were taken to a Piraeus clinic for tests and 20 of them remained for treatment, while a five-year old child that presented the same symptoms was taken to the Children's Hospital for precautionary reasons.

The clinic officials stated that most of the patients suffered dehydration and severe symptoms of gastroenteritis that probably got during their visit to Mount Sinai.

[03] TWO IMPORTANT ECONOMIC EVENTS WILL TAKE PLACE IN THESSALONIKI

Thessaloniki will be at the center of international attention next week as in the next few days two important economic and business events namely, ASIA FORUM 2000 and the 1st International Economic Conference, will be held in the city.

Specifically, ASIA FORUM will be held on May 22-28 with the participation of delegations from tens of states and the heart of the Euro-Asian cooperation will beat in Thessaloniki. The goal of the forum will be the mutual exchange of information, the promotion of multi-lateral business cooperation and investments and the strengthening of the tourist sector through cooperation and the development of new strategies.

Meanwhile, tens of academicians and scientists will present proposals for the smooth transition of the Balkan states to the market economy within the framework of the 1st International Economic Conference that will be held on May 27-27 organized by the Association of Economic Universities in south-eastern Europe in cooperation with the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki.

The conference will be held under the auspices of the Greek president with the participation of representatives from 40 universities from south-eastern Europe, distinguished scientists from the sector of education, economic science and finance and representatives from research centers of the central banks of Turkey and Hungary.

[04] OVER 3.700 NATO SOLDIERS HAVE ARRIVED IN GREECE

Over 3.700 NATO soldiers have arrived in Greece from Denmark, Germany, the United States, Hungary and Turkey within the framework of the NATO "Dynamic Mix" exercise that started this morning and will be completed on June 10, according to the Greek defense ministry.

The deployment of the NATO forces will continue throughout the weekend and the training activities will begin on Monday.

The scenario of the exercise does not predict the case of a military threat against NATO member-states but instability in the south-eastern wing of the alliance that could be civil war and ethnic cleansing.

The exercise also provides for joint missions of Greek and Turkish F16 fighter jets. Twelve Turkish F16 landed at the Air Base of Nea Anchialos, near Volos in central Greece yesterday.

[05] SAFETY INSPECTIONS ON THE BOEING 767 PASSENGER PLANES

The Federal Agency of Civil Aviation in the United States ordered inspections to be made to the engines of the Boeing 767 passenger planes because in one of them it was found that three of the four safety bolts holding the engine to the wing had been destroyed.

The US airlines must inspect all their Boeing 767 planes in the next 10 days but it must be noted that there was no order to ground them until the inspection is complete.

The order issued concerns only the airplanes that belong to US airlines. A total of 230 Boeing 767 airplanes are currently in use worldwide and 120 of them belong to seven US airline companies.
