[02] JOINT COMMUNIQUE BY THE EU LEADERS IN BERLIN

    Berlin, 3 June 2000 (16:51 UTC+2)

The European leaders appeared very concerned in the presentation of their joint communique in Berlin regarding the action and role of the multi-national, monopoly economic groups as opposed to policy.

The host of the Berlin meeting German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder underlined that policy must take the first place in the globalization process and added that there is a de-escalation of democracy when institutions are uncontrolled.

French prime minister Lionel Jospen underlined that globalisation means world responsibility that must be controlled, stressing that in the meeting it was confirmed that policy has a priority.

When US president Bill Clinton was asked by reporters if he feels European he responded that he feels a democrat and is positive toward Europe, adding that Europe has a single currency and a functioning economic and political framework.

Chancellor Schroeder stated that the cohesion of the group that attended the conference will not break regardless of what could happen and accompanied by all the leaders who took part in the conference, he stated that a network must be created to deal with the globalization process and protect the international institutions. He said that the participants discussed issues concerning common values, democracy, social cohesion, human rights, racism and anti-Semitism and economic development, adding that a continuous fight is needed against poverty both at a national and an international level.

In the joint communique are mentioned among others the issues of development, employment, the new economy, digital technologies, the information society and the improvement of the social security systems, while it is underlined that a priority must be given to education.

Mr. Clinton stated that the joint communique reflects the way each leader sees the world and added that they all agreed that globalization presents the world with huge challenges for development and what is needed to be done is to promote the development of education and ease inequalities. He also said that an effort must be made to fight diseases and famine, support human values and counter racial discrimination.

He also stated that all the participants in the Berlin conference agreed to create a network aimed at facing challenges and enter the practical level in order to find solutions. Mr. Clinton stated that in the next meeting the leaders will tackle the issue of the education of the people in the Third World countries, while an agreement was reached to fight AIDS and tuberculosis.

[03] AIR POLLUTION INCREASES CHILD MORTALITY

    Athens, 3 June 2000 (16:50 UTC+2)

The air pollution increases the child mortality rate, according to recent studies. Scientific research conducted in Sao Paolo and Mexico City, which have increased air pollution, showed a child mortality rate increase of 3-4% for every 10-unit rise in air pollutants (particles in the air).

Another research that was conducted in 1999 in industrial centers of the Czech Republic showed that children aged 1 month to 1 year, who had died during that year, had been exposed to high levels of air pollution.

The data above were presented today in the 9th Conference on Child Respiratory Diseases organized by the Allergy Department of the Penteli Children Hospital in Athens under the auspices of the Greek Children Medicine Society.

[06] PAPOULIAS IS AGAINST THE SANCTIONS IN SERBIA

    Belgrade, 3 June 2000 (16:50 UTC+2)

The policy of pressures on Yugoslavia is wrong and is opposed to the common goals of peace and stability stated parliamentary lasting committee on foreign affairs and defense chairman Karolos Papoulias in the meeting he had in Belgrade yesterday with Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic within the framework of his three-day formal visit to Yugoslavia.

According to a statement issued by the Yugoslav presidency, Mr. Milosevic stated that bilateral relations will develop successfully in accordance with the friendship that exists between the two countries in spite of the US pressures to which Greece is exposed.

The blind obedience of the EU state governments to the US suggestions causes huge damages to the European continent and especially to the Balkan region, said Mr. Milosevic, and underlined that the European governments first must protect the interests of their people and not the interests of the US and its irrational idea to dominate over the whole world.
