    Thessaloniki, 15 August 2001 (19:21 UTC+2)

    Thousands of pilgrims and spokespersons of the political scene and local authorities attended Holy Mass and watched the procession of the icon of the Holy Mother Of Souli, in the Monastery of Panagia Soumela in Korinthia of Kastania Imathias.

    The Ministers of Culture, Evaggelos Venizelos, Macedonia and Thrace, Giorgos Paschalidis, the secretary general of the same Ministry, PASOK MP Stelio Papathemelis, MPs of New Democracy Savvas Tsitouridis, Parthena Fountoukidou, Panagiotis Psomiadis, Mihalis Halkidis and the Mayor of Athens, Mr. Dimitris Avramopoulos.

    In statements to the press, Mr. Venizelos stressed: "The Hellinism of Pontus is sending from here, Panagia Soumela, today a message to all Greeks abroad a message of faith, devoutness and generosity."

    Mr. Paschalidis stressed the need for a friendly approach between Church and State, a reassessment of their relationship.

    Mr. Tsitouridis stated that the flame that traveled from the mountains of Pontus to these of Macedonia, proves the strength and continuity of Hellinism. "With the help of the Holy Mother we hope for better days."

    Mr. Avramopoulos stressed: "Today all of Greece is honoring and bowing before the Holy Mother." The Mayor of Athens further stated that he prayed for the Holy Mother to show our homeland the way and to protect it , and when asked if he had asked for something from the Holy Mother he answered that he always does, protection and her blessings, just like all other Greeks."

    [02] TRIUMPHANT WELCOME FOR OUR CHAMPIONS

    A triumphant welcome awaited the champions returning from World Championship Track Meet in Edmonton Canada when they arrived this afternoon in Athens.

    At the "Eleftherios Venizelos" airport the champions of Edmonton were welcomed by representatives of the political leadership, fans and relatives, who congratulated Kostas Kenteris, Mirela Tzelili, Kostas Gatsioudis, Tasoula Kelesidou and the rest of the athletes that took part in the meet.

    `Katerina Thanou was the only one unaccounted for, since she stayed in Amsterdam, from there traveling to Zurich to take part in another meet.

    "If I was going to write a book, the title would be 'Justice done to Kostas'. If God keeps me well, we'll have more medals for our country. I will keep working just as hard, and I hope you see me celebrating again, with my hands in the air at the finish line", stated the World Champion of the 200 m. dash, Kostas Kenteris.

    Mirela Tzelili could not withhold her joy: "In a foreign country we cannot understand our success, but once we return home we feel the greatest pride, when we see how much people love us."

    Kostas Gatsioudis stepped onto the champions' stand for the third consecutive time, claiming the silver medal in the javelin. "It was an thrilling meet and I believe I did well, even though my preparation was lacking."

    Finally, Tasoula Kelesidou, who didn't manage to win a medal for a few centimeters, stressed: "After my knee injury, I believe I made decent appearance, but there is a slight bitter feeling on my part for getting fourth place."

    [03] PAPANTONIOU STATEMENTS ON PASOK CONGRESS

    Rhodes, 15 August 2001 (20:10 UTC+2)

    The Minister of National Economy expressed his certainty hat Kostas Simitis will be reelected President of PASOKat the congress, and with a great majority of the votes, during a press conference held yesterday in Rhodes.

    "Only parties with strong leaderships can govern and win elections. this controversy cannot continue because it undermines the governments ability", stated the Minister characteristically.

    [04] KARAMANLIS STATEMENTS FROM TINOS

    Tinos, 15 August 2001 (19:16 UTC+2)

    "Today is a day full of symbolism. A day of reverence and devoutness for the great celebration of Orthodoxy, and of confidence and pride for the Armed Forces. Today is a day when we must tap from our faith all the diachronic values and principals of Hellinism. We must bring man to the center of our efforts.To create a more cooperating, more humane society. To make all Greeks parties of prosperity and diligence."

    The above were the statements made by the president of New Democracy, Kostas Karamanlis, after the celebrations in Tinos.

    "And most of all, we must turn our back on all the issues that divided and hurt Greeks in the past. We must create a real national and secular oneness. This is the weapon of Hellinism for the future."

    [05] PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC MEETS CHAMPIONS PARENTS

    The President of the Republic Mr. Stefanopoulos is in Mytilini. He attended Holy Mass and watched the procession of the Holy Mother's Icon in Agiasos In Lesvos.

    Mr. Stefanopoulos met with Kostas Kenteris' parents and congratulated them on their son's gold metal in the World Track

    [06] MONITORING SYSTEM FOR FISHING BOATS

    Athens, 15 August 2001 (18:59 UTC+2)

    After the decision of Agricultural Minister Mr. G. Anomeritis, which is placed in the framework of a relevant decision made by the Fishing Committee, the monitoring system of fishing boats is put into operation. With this decision, all professional fishing boats that have the relative permit are required to place an instrument so that they can be detected by satellite. Also, the captains of the aforementioned boats are responsible for the constant functioning of this device. There will be consequences if one does not comply with the decision, while the installment of these devices must be made by December 31 2001.
