    Democracy clashes with terrorism and Greece has the obligation to contribute in a meaningful way to the efforts made to eradicate this global nightmare, stated right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy leader Kostas Karamanlis, adding that the present situation leaves no room for passive observers.

    Speaking in the 24th general assembly of the European Women Union, Mr. Karamanlis stated that the globization of terror makes the expansion of the EU and NATO borders imperative, stressing that the effects of the crisis on the Balkans must be examined carefully.

    [02] CONFERENCE ON THE EUROPEAN CONSTITUTION

    The European Constitution will be discussed by Greek and foreign experts on October 28-29 in Thessaloniki on the occasion of the international conference on The Course to the European Constitution and the Recent Revision of the Greek Constitution organized by the International and European Economic Law Center.

    The conference will be formally opened by culture minister Evangelos Venizelos on October 28. Greek and foreign law specialists will present the challenges facing the European Unification and the prospects of a Common European Constitution.

    [03] THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ANTHRAX HOAXES WILL BE BROUGHT TO JUSTICE

    All those, who are responsible for the anthrax hoaxes will be brought to justice, warned the Civil Protection secretariat in Athens.

    The statement was made on the occasion of the anthrax hoax targeting the ministry of health that caused great alarm.

    Meanwhile, a suspicious letter was found at the Corfu Post Office yesterday.

    [04] THE DOCTORS OF THE WORLD TO HELP THE AFGHAN REFUGEES

    A Doctors of the World mission leaves for southeastern Iran with humanitarian aid of 2.400 blankets, 5 tons of food and 3 tons of medicine for the needs of the Afghan refugees, who sought refuge to the reception centers set along the Iran-Afghanistan borders. The team with the humanitarian aid will arrive in Teheran via Turkey next Monday or Tuesday.

    The Greek mission wishes to cooperate with the Iranian authorities and specifically, the Iranian Red Crescent to distribute the humanitarian aid and offer medical care to the refugees.

    [05] FIVE SHIP-WORKERS WERE KILLED IN PIRAEUS

    Piraeus, 20 October 2001 (17:48 UTC+2)

    Five ship-workers, members of the maintenance crew working in the hold of the tanker "Sailor" docked in Salamina, near Piraeus, were killed from a strong explosion at noon today, as it was made known by the merchant marine ministry.

    The ship's chief engineer managed to get out alive half an hour after the explosion and was taken to a Piraeus hospital with light burns. An investigation is underway on the causes of the explosion.

    [06] THE BANK OF GREECE WILL SUPPLY THE BALKANS WITH EURO

    Thessaloniki, 20 October 2001 (17:44 UTC+2)

    The Bank of Greece has opened contacts with the Balkan central banks to supply them with Euro bank notes, according to Bank of Greece governor Loukas Papadimos.

    Based on the Bank of Greece assessments, people in those countries have large sums of Euro-zone bank notes, mainly German marks, estimated at US$6 billion which will have to be exchanged with Euros as starting on January 2, 2002 the Euro will become legal tender in the EU countries.

    [07] THE MILITARY EXERCISE "NIKIFOROS" ENDS TODAY

    Larnaca, 20 October 2001 (18:24 UTC+2)

    The annual National Guard military exercise "Nikiforos" will be completed today with military operations that will be held in the regions of Orounta and Kalo Chorio in Larnaca, Cyprus.

    The final phase of the exercise will be watched among others by Greek undersecretary of defense Dimitris Apostolakis and his Armenian counterpart, general Michail Grigorian.
