[01] SIMITIS DEPARTS FOR US ON TUESDAY

Prime Minister Kostas Simitis is leaving for the US on Tuesday, where
he will meet with US President George Bush at the White House. On
Wednesday he will be in New York where he will meet with the Secretary
General of the UN, Kofi Annan, and Archbishop of America Dimitrios. In
Washington he will have meetings with Vice President Dick Cheney and
Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defense, Colin Powell and Donald
Rumsfeld.
In his discussions with President Bush, issues concerning the joint
world front against terrorism, bilateral relations, European
developments, the Balkans situation and the Middle East, the 2004
Olympics, the Cyprus issue and Greek-Turkish relations are expected to
be raised. The government is aiming at promoting Greek positions and is
prepared after consecutive meetings, which took place presided over by
Prime Minister Simitis. In an interview to the Vima, former Minister
Theodoros Pagalos appreciated that the US will pressure Greece to pass
the Euroarmy plan which Greece disagreed with a few weeks ago at the
Laaken Summit Meeting. A few days after Mr. Simitis' stay in the US,
Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit will meet with George Bush.
[02] ILLEAGAL IMMIGRANTS TAKEN TO RAFINA

The 291 illegal immigrants (most of whom are Kurdish) spotted on
Saturday on the Hilmi Dede fishing boat in the Evian Gulf, are staying
at the Rafina Gymnasium. The illegal immigrants, who are exhausted due
to the harsh weather conditions, went ashore safely in Rafina last
night. They received medical attention , but hospitalization was not
deemed necessary. Clothing and food was also dispensed.
The Turkish fishing boat was impounded. The captain of the fishing
boat, Kan Engin, age 31, and crew members Pasa Cruka, age 49, and
Mustafa Cafat, age 25, all Turkish citizens, were arrested.
