    US State Department spokesperson Phil Reeker cited the annual US State Department report on terrorism in which no reference is made to al Qaeda activities in Greece, responding to a question on the recent New York Times report where a relevant reference was being made.

    Mr. Reeker underlined that the US views on terrorism are being expressed in the US State Department report and not in newspaper reports.

    The US State Department spokesperson stated in Washington, responding to a question on whether he regards Athens' Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport as safe, that he knows nothing about the safety of airports and referred the journalists to relevant research made by the US authorities.

    [02] VENIZELOS: THE CONSTRUCTION OF OLYMPIC PROJECTS IS CLOSE TO COMPLETION

    One year from tomorrow, the 2004 Olympic Games will be underway in Athens. Greek Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos issued a message on the occasion stressing that everybody can see with their own eyes that the Olympic projects are very close to being completed and no one has the right to have reservations as far as the result of the Olympic preparations is concerned.

    Mr. Venizelos also added in his message that everybody must work together for the success of this major sports event.

    [03] LOWER WAGES AND MORE VACATION TIME FOR WORKERS IN GREECE

    The annual income for workers in Greece is among the lowest in the EU but the Greek workers enjoy more vacation time annually compared to the European average, based on a comparative study prepared by Mercer Human Resource Consulting on the work conditions in the EU member states.

    According to the report, it is obvious that workers in the EU enjoy far better protection by law compared to their colleagues around the world through legally established rights concerning minimum wage, working hours and paid annual vacation time.

    [04] GAINS IN THE ASE

    Marginal gains were recorded in the Athens Stock Exchange today. The general index rose to +0.14% at 2.135,20 points, while the volume of transactions was at 118.2 million euros.

    Of the stocks trading today, 72 recorded gains and 258 had losses, while the value of 51 stocks remained unchanged.

    [05] REQUEST FOR THE RELEASE OF ONE DEFENDANT IN THE 17N TRIAL

    The defense lawyers of Anestis Papanastasiou, one of the defendants in the terrorist group 17 November trial, have filed a request for the release of their client.

    The request was filed on the grounds of a legal complication as a result of the fact that the Council of Court of Appeals Judges did not extend his detention time in jail for another six months. Based on that, Anestis Papanastasiou is illegally held and had to be out of prison since August 9.

    [06] HUMANITARIAN AID FROM GREECE TO PAKISTAN

    Pakistan will receive humanitarian aid of 50.000 euros from Greece, according to Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Andreas Loverdos.

    The aid will be received by the regions of Sindh and Balochistan in Pakistan which suffered extensive floods recently.

    [07] BRITISH FAR WEST IN THE GREEK ISLAND OF RHODES

    Rhodes, 12 August 2003 (11:48 UTC+2)

    Far West scenes were recorded in the region of Faliraki in the southeastern Aegean island of Rhodes when scuffles broke out between British tourists in the early morning hours today.

    During the scuffles a young man was killed when he was hit with a broken bottle. Police arrested seven people.
