    The countdown for the political developments and initiatives to be announced by the Prime Minister will commence on January 6. Mr. Simitis will meet with Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou at the Maximos Mansion on that day, and on the following day, January 7, he will inform the President of the Republic on his initiatives. He will then hold a joint meeting of the Governmental Committee and the Executive Office, following which he will publicly announce his decisions.

    [02] SIMITIS SENDS CONDOLENCES TO CHIRAC ON DEATH OF FRENCH TOURISTS

    A telegram expressing his condolences was sent by Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis to the President of the French Republic Jacques Chirac, regarding the death of the 135 French tourists who were on board the Egyptian airliner that crashed in the Red Sea this morning.

    In his telegram the Prime Minister mentioned: Dear Mr. President, I would like to express my deepest sympathies for the unfair loss of dozens of your fellow countrymen, as a consequence of the tragic airplane crash. I would like to convey to you the deepest sorrow of the Greek people and please address our warmest condolences to the families of the deceased.

    [03] HUMANITARIAN AID SENT TO IRAN

    Athens, 3 January 2004 (16:50 UTC+2)

    Humanitarian aid consisting of medicines, tents, blankets, etc. was sent by the Greek Rescue Team, the Greek branch of Doctors of the World and other Greek humanitarian organizations, to the people of the Iranian city of Bam, which was tried by the recent devastating earthquake.

    An Air Force C-130 took off from the Elefsina airport this morning with the humanitarian aid for Iran on board. Members of the organizations mentioned above are also traveling to the area, to record all the needs so more missions can be planned.

    The Greek branch of Doctors of the World is expected to organize a small clinic in the area struck by the earthquake, in cooperation with the Red Crescent.

    [04] GOOD START FOR MARKETS IN 2004

    A good start was made markets in 2004, with the Greek stock market leaping over 2300 units in the first meeting of the new year, as the general index showed gains of 2.21%, reaching 2313.64 units. Basic price indexes rose in most Asian markets, as did European markets.
