  • [01] IRENAEUS THREATENS WITH REPLACEMENTS

    Jerusalem, 6 May 2005 (14:20 UTC+2)

Patriarch Irenaeus of Jerusalem expressed his intention to replace the hierarchs who will not respond to the invitation to attend the 3rd meeting of the 18th Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem this afternoon.

Only 6 hierarchs had attended the first two meetings held earlier today.

Deputy Foreign Minister Mr. Skandalakis characterized the joint statement issued by 11 hierarchs and 23 Archimandrites, who withdrew their support from Irenaeus, as very serious development and reiterated that the government wants to protect the Greek Orthodox nature of the Patriarchate, its prestige and unity.

Meanwhile an Ecumenical Patriarchate mission is expected in Jerusalem.

[02] PROSTATE CANCER IS THE SECOND CAUSE OF DEATH IN THE WORLD

    Thessaloniki, 6 May 2005 (17:43 UTC+2)

The prostate cancer is developing into the second cause of death for men worldwide as more and more males are being affected by it, even those at the 45-50 age group.

An estimated one thousand new cases are being reported in Greece annually. The decease can be early diagnosed and in 9 out of 10 cases is curable if it is on its early stages, based on the reports presented in the 8th International Conference of Geriatric Nephrology and Urology taking place in Thessaloniki.

In older ages, with an emphasis on the 6th and 7th decade of life, more frequent is the urinary bladder cancer, which accounts for 3% of all cancer cases in humans and is responsible for 3.5% of all cancer-caused deaths.

[03] CONGRATULATORY LETTER TO THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER

    Athens, 6 May 2005 (17:19 UTC+2)

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis sent a congratulatory letter to British Prime Minster Tony Blair on the occasion of his reelection.

Mr. Karamanlis wished to Mr. Blair every success and extended his warmest congratulations for his reelection. He also expressed the certainty that close cooperation will continue on a large number of issues of bilateral and European interest as well as on international issues.

[04] THE DEFENSE MINISTER ON TURKEY'S BEHAVIOR

    Athens, 6 May 2005 (14:52 UTC+2)

Turkey's provocative behavior systematically and repeatedly violates International Law, creates big problems to the region's stability and security and undermines the efforts for the improvement of the Greek-Turkish relations as well as Turkey's European prospect, stated the Greek Minister of Defense.

He also underlined that the Greek armed forces are vigilant on a 24hour basis and defend decisively and effectively the Greek national interests and international legality.

According to Foreign Ministry spokesman Giorgos Koumoutsakos the 30th round of the exploratory contacts between Greece and Turkey will take place in Athens with the participation of ambassadors Anastasios Skopelitis and Ali Tuigan.

[05] THE PATRIARCH OF JERUSALEM IS DEPOSED

    Jerusalem, 6 May 2005 (18:54 UTC+2)

A total of 12 hierarchs signed a text denouncing Patriarch Irenaeus of Jerusalem.

Based on the Patriarchate charter, Patriarch Irenaeus is declared automatically deposed from his post and now the Jordanian government remains to be informed about it.

The meeting of the Patriarchate's Holy Synod scheduled to take place this afternoon was cancelled due to lack of a quorum.

Holy Grave priests have proceeded with a temporary sit-in of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem.
