    Foreign Minister Petros Molyviatis expressed the certainty that during the Karamanlis-Bush meeting will be reconfirmed the meaningful improvement of bilateral relations expressed in the form of a strategic cooperation assumed by the Greek-US relations.

    Mr. Molyviatis made the statement speaking in the state-run television station NET on the meeting of Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis with US President George Bush in the White House.

    Foreign Minister Molyviatis stated that relations have strengthened at bilateral level and an effort is being made to strengthen cooperation at economic level as well, confirming, at the same time, that the issues of Cyprus, the FYROM name and the course of the Greek-Turkish relations will also be discussed.

    [02] TRAIN COLLISION IN RODOPOLIS

    The four people injured in the collision of two trains in Rodopolis this morning were taken to the Serres Hospital.

    The cargo train engine driver is in the most serious condition with leg injuries. Three employees of the passenger train have lighter injuries. They are the engine driver, the supervisor and a female security guard. Also, 5 of the 16 train passengers were taken to the Rodopolis Health Center to receive first aid.

    According to estimates, the crash was the result of human error and specifically, a traffic light violation.

    A Greek Railways Organization committee of specialists arrived in the region this morning to investigate the exact causes of the accident.

    Trains from Thessaloniki to Serres run as scheduled and the two damaged trains were removed from the railway tracks.

    [03] FRIENDSHIP AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE MUNICIPALITIES OF KASTORIA AND PLOVDIV

    The mayors of Kastoria, northwestern Greece and Plovdiv in Bulgaria, Dimitris Papoulidis and Ivan Chomakov respectively, signed a friendship agreement materializing in a short period of time their decisions for the promotion of cooperation between the two municipalities discussed recently in the International Economic Forum in Plovdiv.

    In a statement issued by the municipality of Kastoria it is mentioned that it was an important initiative on behalf of the two mayors and results will be obvious in time given the fact that there is a great field for business actions available to be exploited by both sides.

    The municipality of Kastoria has also promoted relations with many municipalities abroad such as, China's Haining Municipality, Kiev in Ukraine and Brasov in Romania, while other cooperation procedures are being promoted with EU municipalities.

    [04] FIFTEEN DOLPHINS, A SHARK, A SMALL WHALE AND TONS OF FISH FOUND DEAD OFF THE COASTS OF SAMOTHRACE

    Fifteen large black dolphins, a shark, a small whale and tons of smaller fish were found dead in large fishnets off the coasts of the island of Samothrace in northern Aegean today by local fishermen.

    The fishermen stated that the fishnets in question are of Italian origin and are being used by Turkish fishermen to catch swordfish. The fishnets were drifting for 10 days in international waters between Turkey and Samothrace and were carried away possibly by strong currents that brought them off the coasts of Samothrace.

    The mayor of Samothrace stated that this is a major ecological disaster, stressing that the fishnets used by the Turkish fishermen destroy the sea wealth.

    [05] THE 13TH MEETING OF THE GREEK-TURKISH COMMITTEE

    The 13th Coordinating Meeting of the Greek-Turkish Committee (Task Force) concerning cooperation on issues of community know-how transfer in view of Turkey's European prospect took place yesterday.

    The meeting took place within the framework of biannual meetings held by turns in Athens and Ankara to evaluate, program and improve the work of the Task Force.

    Head of the Greek delegation was ambassador Thrasivoulos Stamatopoulos, while ambassador Volkan Bozkir, Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister responsible for EU issues, was the head of the Turkish delegation. The meeting also attended representatives of Greek and Turkish government ministries and Public Administration officials.

    [06] MEMORIAL DAY FOR THE GENOCIDE OF THE GREEKS FROM PONTOS

    Thessaloniki, 19 May 2005 (13:59 UTC+2)

    An event in memory of the victims of the genocide of the 353,000 Greeks from Pontos by the Turks will take place this evening in Thessaloniki.

    The special event will be followed by a protest march to the Turkish Consulate.

    A delegation of the Pan-Hellenic Federation of Greeks from Pontos Associations will deliver a resolution on the Genocide of the Greeks from Pontos to the Turkish Consulate.

    The Pan-Pontian Federation of Greece has decided to form a documentation scientific committee to prepare the genocide file.
