  • [01] PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES

    Athens, 19 October 2005 (13:26 UTC+2)

Precautionary measures for six more days will be in effect in the prefecture of Chios, east Aegean, until the test results are made public from the institutes in Thessaloniki and London where samples have been sent from Chios to determine if the turkeys in the tiny island of Inouses are infected with the bird flu virus.

Minister of Agriculture Evangelos Basiakos also stated that the results from the reexamination tests on the nine new samples from turkeys coming from the family farm in question were negative.

Bulgaria banned the imports of live poultry, eggs and other poultry products from Greece while it formed a National Committee on Pandemics to examine the situation, make sure that the country will have enough vaccines and medicines, and define the high risk population groups.

A sample from an infected dead bird found in FYROM will be sent to laboratories in Britain.

[02] NO MAJOR EARTHQUAKES EXPECTED IN GREECE

    Thessaloniki, 19 October 2005 (17:45 UTC+2)

The latest earthquakes recorded in Greece are not a phenomenon of heightened earthquake activity, according to seismology professor emeritus Vasilis Papazachos.

In statements to ANA-MPA, he stressed that based on evidence from seismological centers the seismic activity of the past few days recorded in a number of regions in Greece is moderate.

He said that nobody can speak about earthquakes with certainty but no major earthquakes, for example measuring 7 on the Richter scale, are expected to hit Greece. Smaller earthquakes are more likely to follow, he added.

Mr. Papazachos explained that the earthquakes in east Aegean recorded two days ago are associated with yesterday's earthquake that rocked the island of Zakynthos in the Ionian Sea in the sense that they stimulated earlier than expected the seismic activity in the Ionian Sea region.

Regarding the earthquakes in the east Aegean islands of Samos and Chios, he stated that they were caused by the movement of the tectonic plate of the Aegean toward the Ionian Sea region.

[03] 10TH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF THRACOLOGY

    Komotini, 19 October 2005 (16:55 UTC+2)

The proposal for a closer cooperation between Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey in the sector of historical and archaeological research was set forth by 10th International Congress of Thracology organizing committee president archaeologist Diamantis Triantafillos.

The conference on Thrace in the Greco-Roman World opened in Komotini yesterday. Bulgaria is represented by the largest delegation in the conference which is held with the participation of 17 countries, among them, Germany, Turkey, Czech Republic and Russia while Greece is represented by 37 scientists.

Petya Ilieva, who is teaching in the University of Sofia, presented the conclusions of her research on the Cohabitation of the Thracians with the Greeks at the Aegean coasts.

Petya Ilieva maintained that the Thracians and the Greeks lived peacefully together and there was Greek influence over the Thracians and Thracian influence over the Greeks. This is particularly obvious in religious worship and more specifically, the temple of the great gods in Samothrace. There are inscriptions, archaeological findings and ceramics that lead to this conclusion, said Petya Ilieva.

The Thracology congress will be completed in Alexandroupolis on Saturday and covers four thematic entities on ancient Thrace namely, nations and cities, economy and society, religion and art and Thrace as the center of rivalry between the sovereign powers of the ancient world.

    [05] EURO COUNTERFEITERS' NETWORK

    Katerini, 19 October 2005 (13:43 UTC+2)

The six members of a counterfeiters' network, among them a police officer, who were arrested in Katerini, north Greece, face heavy charges.

According to police, the Greek Police special guard together with other 8 individuals had abducted two Albanians and held them in containers in Katerini because they had economic differences with them resulting from their involvement in counterfeiting.

A total of 173,000 counterfeit euros were found in the container in banknotes of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 euros as well as material used in counterfeiting.
