  • [01] EARTHQUAKES IN JAPAN AND LIMNOS

    Athens, 15 November 2005 (13:25 UTC+2)

An earthquake of magnitude 6.9 or 7.2, based on other calculations, was recorded in the early morning hours today in Japan. A 50-centimetre high tsunami warning was issued immediately. No victims or damages were recorded.

Four earthquakes, the strongest of which was 4.9 on the Richter scale, were recorded between 7.01 and 9.00 this morning in the sea region between the north Aegean islands of Limnos and Samothrace.

According to Thessaloniki Aristotle University Geophysics Laboratory seismologist Costas Papazachos, the region belongs to the north Aegean zone and is a continuation of the Anatolian fault in Greece. The region is very earthquake active and in the past has given strong earthquakes the strongest of which was recorded in 1981 and measured 7.2 on the Richter scale.

An earthquake measuring less than 4 on the Richter scale was recorded at 8.23 last night, while another tremor weaker than 3 on the Richter scale was recorded on November 12.

According to Mr. Papazachos, the earthquakes recorded are regarded as normal seismic activity and should not be a cause for concern.

[03] THE GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN ON THE ECONOMY

    Athens, 15 November 2005 (18:41 UTC+2)

Government spokesman Thodoris Rousopoulos, responding to a barrage of questions on the country's economy and the withdrawal of securitization from the draft budget, stated that the further progress of the government's economic policy will be based mainly on measures of permanent nature that will focus on curbing public spending, and facing overspending and tax evasion without imposing additional taxes.

Mr. Rousopoulos observed that no other European country has managed to do so much in such a short period of time. Deficit was cut 2% of the GDP while, at the same time, the country has the highest growth rate in Eurozone (3.6%) having cut unemployment rate by 1%.

The European Commission recognizes the progress made in 2005 which is greater than 1.9% of the GDP surpassing its own predictions and was achieved through structural measures of a permanent nature. Deficit without securitization is 4.4% of the GDP. Therefore, the progress achieved is 2.2% of the GDP, stated Mr. Rousopoulos.

The government spokesman clarified that European Commissioner Almunia through public statements has given political approval to the process to proceed and now the technical processing conducted by the Greek government and Eurostat must continue expected to be completed by the end of 2005. Securitization was not included in the draft budget because it had to be submitted on November 21, added Mr. Rousopoulos.
