VI International Symposium on Ancient Macedonia
From: Olga Panagiotidou <email@example.com>Archaeological and historical research into Ancient Macedonia has been flourishing in the last two decades. Excavations are bringing a wealth of finds to light that provide evidence on all aspects of the knowledge of ancient history, linguistics, sociology, religious history, numismatics, and many other fields of research. An almost forgotten region of Greece has thus taken centre stage and moved into the spotlight of scholarly interest.
Twenty-five years ago, the Institute for Balkan Studies launched a serious effort to support the study of the new finds and to encourage discussion of the latest scientific advances. The initiative took the form of a series of international symposia on Ancient Macedonia, and these scholarly meetings have acquired International repute and are attended by scholars from all over the world.
The sixth Symposium in particular, scheduled for October 1996, will take the form of a scientific forume that will contribute to our knowledge about Ancient Macedonia. Thessaloniki, the macedonian metropolis, will thus move one more decisive step along the way to becoming the world centre of historical and archaeological research into this region. In the Symposium 145 papers will be presented. The Institute for Balkan Studies will not accept any more papers.
