Invitation to the workshop on Information Technologies for Mobility

Dear Sir/Madam,

You are cordially invited to the workshop that the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) is organizing, with the participation of the European Commission on April 22nd, 1997 for information exchange and discussion on Information Technologies for Mobility.

The purpose of this meeting is to raise the awareness of the Greek Industry and Business on how the use of Wireless applications can help to achieve levels of functionality that are not normally available using conventional technology.

The thematic call I.T. for Mobility is specifically designed to bring together the range of different contributions necessary for the development of new solutions that will enhance mobility in the emerging Information Society.

This thematic call is based on the objectives and scope of the Esprit work programme (1997) and has the characteristic that proposers may address, and are indeed encouraged to address multiple technologies which by their combination or integration lead to enhanced mobility solutions. Consequently, this call is expected to stimulate work, which cuts across the Esprit programme and presents an opportunity for innovative, multi-disciplinary R&D activities and broad co-operation between industrial partners having complementary skills, approaches and technologies.

The general topic of enhancing mobility (physical and virtual) cuts across various Community activities. The "I.T. for Mobility" call addresses the Esprit Programme contribution and provides an opportunity to channel technologies and skills which can enhance and accelerate the realization of the information society. In this scope, evaluation of proposals and subsequent project follow-up will be conducted in collaboration and with the support of other related Community R&D programmes.

The topics covered by the thematic call and the workshop are

* hardware and software for "nomadic" appliances including - smart cards, personal assistants, mobile network computer and similar devices - languages, operating systems, multimedia tools, and adaptive agents for portable devices;

* hardware support for portable appliances: low weight, low power, power management, wireless interfaces, high endurance and reliability; memory technologies; hardware/software co-design and system integration;

* Seamless adaptation to multi-modal communications infrastructures both wired and wireless (infra-red, wireless-LAN, public & private telecom networks), interfaces to "static" appliances including distributed systems in the home;

* Intuitive interfaces, displays, sensors, microsystems, novel input-output devices, voice and handwriting recognition, etc.

* mobile multimedia (images, video, speech, etc.), distributed multimedia databases, geographical information systems, medical imaging, etc.

* shared virtual workspaces, video conferencing, remote access to and interactive use of advanced applications, information and facilities, etc.

* follow-me systems, global positioning systems, in-vehicle navigation and guidance systems, etc.

* applications for the mobile or remote worker, collaborative working, the virtual enterprise, collaboratories, corporate memories, intelligent agents, data mining, field-sales & service applications, etc.

* access to societal services: health, education, travel, internet shopping, tele-banking, electronic newspapers, etc.

In the workshop there will be presentations of success stories of the use of Wireless technologies in industrial and business applications, in Europe and Greece. Dr D. Broster from the European Commission will present the EC program that will support the uptake of I.T. for Mobility in Industry. Also, representatives from both industry and academic institutes will present their experience in industrial and business environments.

Participation to the workshop is free. The venue will be held at the Administration building of the National Technical University of Athens.
