The fifth annual New England Hellenic Medical and Dental Society Research Symposium is scheduled for Saturday, September 20th, 2002, 8:30 am - 1 pm, and will take place at the Sackler Center for Health Communications at Tufts University School of Medicine (Please see below for address and parking).

The preliminary program for this event will be posted on the NEHMDS web site (http://www.hri.org/NEHMDS), featuring lecture presentations by established authorities in their fields, followed by a poster exhibition.

All medical, dental and allied health profession students, residents and fellows are particularly encouraged to submit current or previously published basic and/or clinical research, to be presented in poster format. Submissions from established investigators are also welcome. There will be a poster competition and a small number of awards will be presented to the best posters, thus concluding the event. Catered buffet-style breakfast and lunch will be available. There will be no charge for attending this event.

The symposium will present the following lectures:

Eleftheria Maratos-Flier, MD
Head, Section on Obesity
Joslin Diabetes Center
Associate Professor of Medicine
Harvard Medical School
"The Obesity Epidemic and What To Do About It?"

Eleftherios Mylonakis, MD Instructor in Medicine Harvard Medical School Division of Infectious Disease Massachusetts General Hospital "Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), a global health problem: Life must be lived forwards, but it can only be understood backwards"

Anthi Tsamtsouris, DMD, MSc Professor of Pediatric Dentistry Tufts School of Dental Medicine "Dental Care in Russia and Saudia Arabia"

We anticipate this Symposium to facilitate networking and foster scientific collaborations within the Greek-American medical and dental community of New England. During this event, both new and established scientists will have the opportunity to present their work and areas of interest and interact with other investigators. Submissions should be no more than one page typed text, including figures. The presenting author should indicate his/her academic status. Submissions may be emailed (as Word documents) to: alexander.georgakis@bmc.org, or mailed to: c/o Alexander Georgakis, MD, New England Hellenic Medical and Dental Society, P.O. Box 120028, Boston, MA 02112. Although there is no deadline for submission, abstracts sent by September 13, 2003 will be included in the Symposium Program.

We expect to have great turnout for this event. Please provide us with feedback, thoughts, ideas and suggestions for ways to improve our social and scientific interaction. We hope to see you all on September 20th!

The Organizing Committee,

Alexander Georgakis, MD
