Fragmented Light

A photography exhibit from Greece by Maro Vandorou

Exhibition duration: September 5 - October 31, 2008

Exhibition Opening with reception: Friday, September 5, 2008 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Exhibition Location: Hillyer Art Space, at 9 Hillyer Court NW, Washington, DC

Fragmented Light consists of original photographic material printed as Platinotypes, a 19th century historic photographic process, which makes use of noble metals (platinum and palladium) to render the paper photosensitive. In a visit to her birthplace, Maro Vandorou is led to the ancient site where departing souls received a last farewell before the long journey to the underworld. Within the modern bustle of the city, to this island of silence charged with ancient memories she returns again and again...

Maro Vandorou was born and raised in Athens, Greece and came to the United States to pursue doctoral studies. Since 2000 her focus has shifted exclusively to image making, with ongoing training, studies, professional experience and expertise in the emerging field of applying digital imaging and printing technologies to traditional fine art domains such as photography and printmaking. As a visual and conceptual artist, Maro Vandorou is among few artists in the world who uses the rare Japanese handmade paper Gampi, and advanced methods of digital image making. Vandorou is a 2007 recipient of an AHEPA National Education Foundation Grant and a 2008 Individual Artist Project Grant from the Regional Arts & Council, from the city of Portland Oregon, where she currently lives and works.
