Although Abdullah Gul, FP deputy from Istanbul, did not get permission from Necmettin Erbakan, the leader of the banned Welfare Party (RP), and he ran his candidacy for the FP leadership. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the former Istanbul Mayor who was also banned from politics, fully supports Gul's candidacy. Bulent Arinc and Abdullatif Sener, the FP deputies who had earlier run their candidacies for leadership, said that they withdraw from being a candidate and support Gul. PRIVATIZATION INITIATIVES LAUNCHED FOR NINE INSTITUTIONS MILLIYET (LIBERAL)NO TIME TO TAKE BRIBESUpon increasing complaints, Kadir Boy, head of the financial department of Istanbul, started a war against bribery. They determined the time needed for tax procedures at tax offices. The lists showing which procedure will take how many minutes will be hung in the entrances of tax offices. If a tax officer exceeds the time given to him during tax collecting procedures, there will be an investigation to find out what caused the delay. According what is found out, the tax officer will be given disciplinary punishment or he could even lose his job. Tax officers are uncomfortable with the new model aimed to prevent bribery. SABAH (LIBERAL)PRODUCTION TO CONTINUEThe industrial production increased 4.2 percent in January 2000 when compared with the figures of the same period in January 1999. The textile production climbed 20.5 percent in January while the annual increase in the ready-made cloth sector was 39.3 percent. The textile and automotive production increased the most in the mentioned period. CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT SUBMITTED TO PARLIAMENT CUMHURIYET (LEFT)WOMEN'S VOICEMore than 2,000 women convened in front of Perpa of Istanbul and walked till Sisli Abide-i Hurriyet Square. The women, who were shouting slogans as saying, ''no to poverty, violence, pressure'', opened banners writing, ''life is meaningful with women.'' The security forces dispersed nearly 50 women who convened in central Konya province while the Diyarbakir police did not permit women to stage a demonstration. The Gaziantep police took into custody Serpil Dagdemir, the spokesman of the Gaziantep Democratic Women Platform, as she wanted to release a press statement. Women from nearly 30 organizations, walked in Sincan township of Ankara. The women carried banners writing, ''equality in education and administration'', ''hand in hand for democracy'', ''we want equality at home, work and education'', and ''our women should not hide their faces with veil. Thus, they can see the world-Ataturk.'' KING ABDULLAH OF JORDAN INVITES TURKISH INVESTORS TO HIS COUNTRY RADIKAL (LEFT)EMERGENCY HOSPITAL TO DUZCEThe Duzce Emergency Aid Hospital which was constructed by the German Technical Cooperation Agency was opened. The Duzce Emergency Aid Hospital has 71 beds. The hospital costed 750,000 German Marks. This amount was met from the 1.5 million German mark assistance which was allocated to the German Technical Cooperation Agency by the German Foreign Ministry and German Economic Cooperation Ministry to buy medical equipment, tents, and basic needs. ''INFLATION WILL DECREASE'' YENI BINYIL (LIBERAL)WOMEN GATHER IN SQUARESTurkish women celebrated World Women's Day in open air meetings in four corners of Turkey where they protested sexual violence and poverty. However, the most creative protest of March 3 came from a man. A government worker employed at Canakkale Municipality protested male supremacy and sexual violence against women by wearing a skirt.
