    HURRIYET (LIBERAL)

    FIRST ARREST IN TRANSFERRED BANK
    Ozgen Tamuman, the former manager of Egebank which was transferred to the Savings Insurance Deposit Fund, was arrested. Tamuman was interrogated by the Sisli Prosecutor's Office and later was sent to prison for embezzling eight million U.S. dollars. Lawyers of Egebank claimed that the money which was illegally transferred to Harmak Makine Inc. was in fact transferred to Murat Demirel.

    EAGLES BECOME WORLD CHAMPION
    Turkish Air Forces became world champion in pentathlon championships held among armies in Finland. Turkish war pilots left behind pilots of nine countries, including Finland, Sweden, Spain, Brazil, Norway, Belgium, France, Czech Republic, and the Netherlands.

    MILLIYET (LIBERAL)

    HAGIA SOFIA IN DANGER
    The Bogazici University Kandilli Observatory Center and Seismology Institute's Earthquake Engineering Department made a research on the historical places in Istanbul. The research indicated that the Hagia Sophia will be seriously damaged in a possible earthquake if measures are not taken immediately. Fatih Mosque and Mihrimah Sultan Mosque will also collapse if they are not restorated and repaired.

    OMBUDSMAN WILL ONLY LISTEN TO COMPLAINTS AND INFORM OFFICIALS
    Justice Minister Hikmet Sami Turk said that the Draft Law on Ombudsmanship should be made together with a constitutional change. Turk noted that the ombudsmen will not deal with the complaints of the citizens who apply to both the judicial organs and the ombudsmen.

    SABAH (LIBERAL)

    51 PERCENT OF THY TO BE SOLD IN OCTOBER
    The majority shares of Turkish Airlines (THY) will be put out to sale in October. Officials of the Prime Ministry said that a tender is planned to be opened for the block sale of 51 percent of THY shares in October. The consent of the Supreme Privatization Board is required for the sale.

    ''TIME FOR SOLUTION IN AEGEAN HAS COME''
    President Ahmet Necdet Sezer hosted dinner in honour of chiefs of general staffs of NATO countries who were in Istanbul for the NATO Military Committee meeting. Sezer said that Turkey wants to have good relations with Greece like it has with all its neighbours. Sezer said, ''it is time to exert efforts for the solution of basic problems regarding the Aegean Sea. We hope our Greek friends will give positive responses to our proposals for the confidence-building measures.''

    CUMHURIYET (LEFT)

    ACTION PLAN IN IMPLEMENTATION
    Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said action plan, prepared for the Southeastern Anatolia, was put into implementation. Pointing out that the 107 projects were implemented step by step, Ecevit said the biggest problem was deficit in public personnel. Ecevit said, ''engineers, teachers, and doctors will have obligatory service in the Southeast like the soldiers and policemen.

    SIT-IN PROTEST AGAINST F-TYPE PRISON
    Sit-in protest has been staged by the Human Rights Association (IHD) to protest F-type prison. Osman Baydemir, Deputy General Director of the IHD, Eren Keskin, the Chairman of IHD Istanbul Department, and Executive Board Members of Istanbul Department, sat in front of the IHD hequarters wearing in black. Baydemir said they will continue this type of protest untill such kind of prison models are closed.

    RADIKAL (LEFT)

    YOUR FIRST LESSON IS HEADSCARF
    Board of Higher Education (YOK), sent a circular to the offices of rectors, and wanted ban on headscarf to be implemented without making confession. YOK began to launch actions following the warning of National Security Council (NSC) that ban on headscarf is not implemented adequately. YOK sent a circular to the offices of the rectors calling for measures to be taken, and added that legal procedure will be carried out toward the lecturers who tolerated the headscarf.

    PRIME MINISTER WARNS FP
    Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit warned Virtue Party (FP) which wanted to make changes in Article 312 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK), and said change regarding Article 312 could not be an issue of bargaining. Prime Minister said ''making Article 312 an issue of bargaining will make the change more difficult.''

    Ecevit said, ''details of the issue have not been discussed among the parties. However, all the parties agree in principle that Article 312 should be amended. ''

    YENİ BİNYIL (LIBERAL)

    ASSURANCE TO THE MARKETS
    Harsh reaction of Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit toward Carlo Cottarelli, International Monetary Fund (IMF) Turkey Desk Chief, negatively effected the markets. Stock Exchange and the interests again began to cover an instable course. Responding to the concerns in question, Ecevit said, ''there is not deviation from the program. I did that statement in order to open ways of compromise. However, I think my statements have been misunderstood in the markets.''

    A SERIES OF MEASURES TO BE IMPLEMENTED TO OVERCOME ENERGY SHORTAGE
    Winter of the year 2001 will be difficult because of energy shortage. Council of Ministers will convene on Thursday with a special agenda and discuss the measures. Cumhur Ersumer, the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, gave clues for the ''Savings Circular,'' which will be issued from the Council of Ministers. Ersumer said working hours will be changed, and that there would not be afternoon break. The working hours will be between 8:00 to 17:00.

    ZAMAN (CONSERVATIVE)

    NEW DEVELOPMENT IN FEHRIYE ERDAL CASE
    Belgium announced that Fehriye Erdal, one of assailants of businessman Ozdemir Sabanci assassination, can be tried in Belgium for the crimes she committed in Turkey. The Belgian Foreign Ministry released a statement about the meeting held between Foreign Minister Ismail Cem and Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michel. The statement said that Belgian side told Cem that Erdal's being tried in Belgium for the crimes she committed in Turkey is legally possible.

    INCREASE IN TOURISM IN JULY
    The figures of State Statistics Institute (DIE) indicated that 1 million 525 thousand 742 foreigners came to Turkey in July. This number was 931 thousand 895 in July 1999. A total of 63.7 percent increase was recorded in the number of tourist coming to Turkey in July 2000 when compared with July 1999.

    [02] THE 2000 SYDNEY SUMMER OLYMPICS -MUTLU OF TURKEY BREAKS WORLD AND OLYMPIC RECORD IN SNATCH

    SYDNEY, Sept 16 (A.A) - Halil Mutlu of Turkey, competing in 56 kg in weight- lifting event in the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics, broke on Saturday world and olympic record in snatch.

    Mutlu lifted 138 kilograms in his third attempt and broke new world and olympic record in snatch.

    The former record of 137.5 kilogram was also broken by Mutlu in the World Champion held in Athens in November 1999.

    [03] SOUTHEASTERN ANATOLIA REGION EXPORTS 204.4 MILLION U.S. DOLLAR TEXTILE IN FIRST EIGHT MONTHS

    GAZIANTEP - The Southeastern Anatolia Region exported 204 million 436 thousand U.S. dollar textile in first eight months of 2000.

    The textile exports of the region increased 10.8 percent in first eight months of 2000 when compared with the figures of first eight months of 1999.

    The region exported 184 million 554 thousand U.S. dollar textile in the same period in 1999.

    A total of 89 million 522 thousand U.S. dollar thread, 103 million 329 thousand U.S. dollar textile, and 11 million 585 thousand U.S. dollar textile products were exported between January and August 2000.

    The textile products were mostly exported to Syria, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Italy, Jordan, Spain, Israel, Portugal, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Romania, the U.S., Greece, France, Algeria, Russia and Azerbaijan.

    [04] THE 2000 SYDNEY SUMMER OLYMPICS -TURKISH SPORTSMEN TO COMPETE IN SEVEN EVENTS

    SYDNEY - Turkish sportsmen will compete with their rivals in seven events in the second day of the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics.

    Naim Suleymanoglu, competing in 62 kg category, will take on with its rival in weight-lifting while Ramazan Phaliani, competing in 57 kg category in boxing, will compete with Ali Haidel of Pakistan.

    Selim Phaliani, competing in 60 kg category in boxing, will take on with Abdels Jibahi of France.

    Archers Elif Altinkaynak, Natalia Nasaridze and Zekiye Keskin Satir will compete in individual events.

    Derya Buyukuncu and Derya Erke will swim in men's 100-metre backstroke while Aytekin Mindan will compete in 200-metre freestyle.

    Ilkay Dikmen will represent Turkey in women's 100-metre breaststroke.

    Huseyin Ozkan, competing in 66 kg category in judo, will take on with Miresmaeli of Ireland.

    Ilknur Akdogan and Ertugrul Icingir will represent Turkey in yachting mistral event.

    [05] TOURISM MINISTRY TO OPEN TO NEW MARKETS

    ANKARA- The Tourism Ministry is looking for public relations and promotion agencies which will introduce and market Turkey in eight markets in 2001.

    Officials of the Tourism Ministry told A.A correspondent on Saturday that the Tourism Ministry will receive bids for the introduction and promotion of Turkey in foreign markets.

    The Ministry will promote Turkey in Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, former Yugoslavian Republics, Latvia, Lithuania, South African Republic, Latin America, China and Taiwan.

    The public relations and promotion agencies which are based in foreign countries, the agencies which are based in Turkey and have business deals abroad, and the agencies which is based in Turkey but which do not have any business deals abroad, can submit bids for the tender.

    The Tourism Ministry will receive the bids until October 16, 2000.

    [06] PROFESSOR GEDIK OF KARADENIZ TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY: -''YOU CAN FIND TRACES OF SETTLEMENT WHEN YOU DIVE 100 METRES DEPT IN RIVER MOUTHS IN THE BLACK SEA''

    TRABZON- Professor Ismet Gedik of Karadeniz Technical University's Geology Engineering Department, said on Saturday that people can find traces of settlement when they dive 100 metres dept in the river mouths in the Black Sea.

    Gedik told A.A correspondent that the archeological findings indicate the places where the socialization started.

    ''In accordance with the findings, the socialization was firstly recorded somewhere in Southeastern Asia. The exact place cannot be found because the former settlement was inundated by waters of Basra Gulf. There is 130 metre difference between the sea level in 10-12 thousand years ago and today's sea level. To this end, all the former settlements remained under waters,'' Gedik said.

    Gedik continued, ''the settlements offshore Sinop can be former settlements. When the geographical map of 10-12 thousand years ago is examined, it can be seen that the sea level was 100 metres lower than the present sea level. Also, people settled down near the river mouths and sea since these places were temperate. To this end, we can find settlements when we dive 100 metre dept in the river mouths of the Black Sea.''

    Researches should be launched in the Basra Gulf to find out the beginning point of human culture and to find out where the Flood occured, Gedik said.

    Gedik added, ''from where to where the Noah's Ark was dragged can be found out if researches are made in the Basra Gulf. The relationship between the Flood and Atlantis story can be illuminated by these researches. Thus, the history of humanity will be brought to daylight.''

    [07] CHIEFS OF GENERAL STAFFS OF NATO COUNTRIES VISIT HISTORICAL AND TOURISTIC SITES OF ISTANBUL

    ISTANBUL- The chiefs of general staffs of NATO countries who attend the NATO Military Committee Meeting visited on Saturday the historical and touristic sites in Istanbul

    Huseyin Kivrikoglu, the Chief of General Staff, also toured with the chiefs of general staffs of other NATO countries.

    The tour started from Sultanahmet Mosque.

    After visiting the Hagia Sophia Museum, the chiefs of general staffs proceeded to the Topkapi Palace.

    The chiefs of general staffs watched the performance of janissary band.

    [08] EXCAVATIONS END IN HASANKEYF

    BATMAN, Sept 16 (A.A) - Excavations which have been carried out in Hasankeyf township of southeastern Batman province for two and a half months, ended on Saturday.

    The excavations were headed by Professor Olus Arik.

    Artifacts belonging to 14th century were unearthed in the excavations to which 25 university students and 100 workers joined.

    Columns and stones were also found in this year's excavations.

    [09] MUTLU OF TURKEY BREAKS THREE WORLD AND THREE OLYMPIC RECORDS

    SYDNEY - Halil Mutlu of Turkey, competing in 56 kg category in weight- lifting in the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics, broke on Saturday three world and three olympic records.

    Mutlu broke world record by lifting 167.5 kilograms in clean and jerk event. The former record of 166.5 was also broken by Mutlu.

    Mutlu, who lifted total of 305 kilograms, broke a new world record. The former record was 302.5 kilograms.

    Thus, Mutlu broke three world and three olympic records and won gold medal.

    [10] THE 2000 SYDNEY SUMMER OLYMPICS -TURKISH BOXERS WIN FIRST TOUR MATCHES

    SYDNEY - Agasi Agaguloglu of Turkey, competing in 54 kg category in boxing in the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics, and Bulent Ulusoy of Turkey, competing in 67 kg, won on Saturday first tour matches.

    Agaguloglu beat Kongde Mai of China 17-4 while Ulusoy defeated Jin Suk Bae of South Korea 8-6. Both Agaguloglu and Ulusoy qualified to the second tour.

    Ulusoy will take on with Donte Craig of the U.S. and Agaguloglu with Cermeno Nehomar of Venezuella on September 21.

    Ramazan Ballioglu of Turkey, in 48 kg, will compete with Marian Velicu of Romania and Selim Phaliani, in 60 kg, will take on with Abdels Jibahi of France on Sunday.

    [11] EXPLOSION OCCURS IN GAZIANTEP UNIVERSITY'S RECTOR'S BUILDING DUE TO GAS LEAKAGE

    GAZIANTEP- An explosion occured on Saturday in Gaziantep University's Rector's Building due to gas leakage.

    Huseyin Filiz, the Rector of the Gaziantep University, told A.A correspondent that the explosion occured in the kitchen of the building around 6.45 a.m. due to a gas leakage in LPG canister.

    Filiz said that the walls of the kitchen were demolished and some windows were shattered in the blast.

    Filiz added that an investigation into the explosion is underway.

    [12] TWO AND A HALF MILLION TOURISTS ARRIVE IN ANTALYA

    ANTALYA - Two and a half million tourists arrived in southern Antalya province since the beginning of 2000.

    Antalya Governor Ertugrul Dokuzoglu gave a bouquet of flowers to German Sabine Rahmel, who was the two and a half millionth tourist who landed at the Antalya Airport.

    Oger Tour awarded Rahmel, her husband and four-year old daughter with a two- week holiday in Side township.

    Sabine said, ''I am pleased to be in Turkey. This is the second visit of my husband to Turkey and my sixth visit to Turkey.''

    [13] POLICE CAPTURE TEN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS IN BODRUM

    BODRUM- Police captured on Saturday ten illegal immigrants in Bodrum township of Aegean Mugla province.

    Police called a coast guard boat when they realized that a group of people set to sail from Yalikavak coast of Bodrum towards Kos island of Greece.

    The coast guard boat which caught the boat heading for Kos island, rescued the illegal immigrants from the boat which was to sink.

    The illegal immigrants, including one Turk, one Ethiopian, and eight Sierra Leoneans, were handed over to Bodrum gendarme forces.

    A total of 32 illegal immigrants who wanted to sneak into Kos island, had a ship accident offshore Bodrum a month ago. Eight of these illegal immigrants were rescued while bodies of five illegal immigrants were found.

    [14] BANK CREDITS VOLUME INCREASES 4.8 PERCENT IN ONE MONTH

    ANKARA - The banks credit volume increased 4.8 percent to 26 quadrillion 543.5 trillion Turkish Liras (TL) between July 28 and September 1.

    The total credit volume at banks was 25 quadrillion 334.5 billion TL on July 28.

    The Central Bank data shows that the total credits in the system was composed of 1 quadrillion 390.5 trillion TL of loans given to financial sector on September 1. The total loans given to financial sector was 1 quadrillion 419.3 trillion TL on July 28.

    The loan given to non-financial sector which was 23 quadrillion 915.2 trillion TL on July 28, increased 5.2 percent to 25 quadrillion 153 trillion TL.

    The credits given to financial sector were composed of 738.7 trillion TL of loans given by deposit banks, 651.8 trillion TL of loans given by development and investment banks.

    [15] URGUP HIGH SCHOOL AND BERLIN OBERSCHULE BECOME SISTER SCHOOLS

    NEVSEHIR - The Urgup High School and Carl-von-Ossietzky-Oberschule School in Berlin, Germany became sister schools.

    A delegation from the German school headed by Reinhard Klockow, a teacher of Oberschule School, and composed of 28 people came to Cappadocia.

    Klockow told A.A correspondent on Saturday that they were amazed by Cappadocia.

    They target at further improving Turkish-German friendship and at increasing the exchange of culture between students of two countries, Klockow said.

    The German students visited Bekir Odemis, the Urgup Mayor, and received information about Cappadoiia.

    Odemis said that they will support the sister school project.

    Odemis added, ''friendship established between youth of two countries will contribute to the introduction of Turkish culture and Cappadocia.''

    [16] 9TH OXFORD-CAMBRIDGE-BOGAZICI UNIVERSITIES ROWING RACES TO BE HELD ON SUNDAY

    ISTANBUL- The 9th Oxford-Cambridge-Bogazici Universities Rowing Races will be held in Istanbul on Sunday.

    The races which are being organized by the Bogazici University and Istanbul Municipality will be held at the Golden Horn.

    Oxford has won the races for four times until today while Cambridge and Bogazici Universities each has won the races for two times.

    [17] THE 2000 SYDNEY SUMMER OLYMPICS -MEDAL STANDINGS IN END OF FIRST DAY

    SYDNEY- Turkey ranked at the eight place in the medal standings in the end of the first day of the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics.

    Australia, which hosts the olympics, became the first in the medal standings in the first day.
