Turkey, Iran and Syria said on Friday that the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has recently intensified its activities in northern Iraq, should not be allowed to operate in that region. "The foreign ministers of Iran, Syria and Turkey expressed their concern regarding the existing situation in northern Iraq, which could be exploited by terrorist groups and external forces and threaten the sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity of Iraq; they stressed that such exploitation should not be allowed" said a joint declaration released by the three countries after the meeting.The second Dublin Summit, aiming to establish peace among the Kurdish parties in northern Iraq and to determine the future of the region, will start tomorrow. Turkey will take part in the summit as an observer and is backed this time by Iran and Syria, two countries carrying weight in the region. Turkish chances for preventing the paving of the way towards the establishment of a Kurdish state at the Dublin summit are much stronger now. /All papers/
[02] STEPHANOPOLIS OPTIMISTIC ABOUT THE CYPRUS PROBLEMUS President Clinton's Adviser George Stephanopolis said he was optimistic about a solution to the Cyprus problem. After his visit to Turkey, Greece and Cyprus, Stephanopolis stressed that Prime Minister Tansu Ciller was sincere in her efforts for resolving the issue. Turkey needed to be brought into the European Customs Union, and steps should be undertaken for the acceptance of Cyprus in the European Union, Clinton's adviser noted. He further pointed out that cooperation among Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, the UK, the European Union and the US was a must for finding a solution to this old problem. /Sabah/
[03] BAYKAL CAPTURES CHP LEADERSHIPDeniz Baykal, the veteran social democrat politicion, has captured the prize which has eluded him for years, with an overwhelming majority of the delegates electing him the new leader of the government-partner Republican People's Party (CHP) at this week's convention. The election of Deniz Baykal to the chairmanship of the Republican People's Party (CHP) crowns a 26-year political career./All Papers/
[04] HOLLAND SUPPORTS TURKEYDutch Foreign Minister Hans van Mierlo will visit Turkey next week. He has already shown himself in support of developments in Turkey by praising the government's moves to change the constitution in line with European Union (EU) standards. The Dutch minister said over the weekend that "Turkey had taken great strides forward for customs union" with the EC. Customs union with the EC is seen as a vital preliminary to full union with the EC member countries.Similarly, EU term president Spanish Foreign Minister Javier Solana said that the EU was looking with more favour at the efforts Turkey was making to get into customs union with the EU. /Milliyet/
[05] DEMIREL TO TAJIKISTANPresident Suleyman Demirel arrived in the Tajik capital of Dushanbe on Sunday to assure this Central Asian country that Turkey was not neglecting it. Demirel's latest Central Asia tour covering Tajikistan and Mongolia was the first trip by a top Turkish official to the two countries. "We have close historical and cultural relations with Tajikistan and Mongolia," Demirel told reporters at Ankara airport before his departure. Foreign Minister Erdal Inonu, State Minister responsible for Transcaucasia and Central Asia Affairs, Ayvaz Gokdemir, and several businessmen are attending the tour. /All Papers/
[06] GERMAN POLICE GRAB WEAPONS AT KURDISH DEMONSTRATIONPolice in the north German town of Neumuenster seized a loaded pistol and ceniters full of petrol on Saturday from Kurdish demonstrators marching in memory of a murdered Kurdish teenager. Some protestors carried banners bearing the symbol of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which is banned in Germany. Investigators suspect the PKK of being behind a long line of arson attacks on Turkish property in Germany. Police detained two people for possessing the pistol, another person wanted for a previous offence and two more for being involved in a violent incident. /All Papers/END |
