He noted that this was in line with the principles laid down by founder of the Turkish Republic, Ataturk, and that this was also the wish oof the Turkish people.Accepting that there were problems, and that there were matters of concern, Demirel stressed however, that there was no need for anxiety on the part of the nation. He said that Ataturk's principles would never be ignored or forgotten and that especially in the area of secularism would Turkey remain constant to its chosen course. /Hurriyet/
[02] RP TO MEET ON COALITION COMPROMISEAddressing a news conference after meeting with his party aides, Prime Minister-designate and Welfare Party (RP) Chairman Necmettin Erbakan, assigned by President Suleyman Demirel to form the new government on Tuesday, said that he was ready for any compromise. The RP also announced that Erbakan would start the formal talks for the formation of a coalition, meeting with True Path Party (DYP) leader Tansu Ciller today and then with Motherland Party (ANAP) leader Mesut Yilmaz on Saturday, Democratic Left Party (DSP) leader Bulent Ecevit on Monday, Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal on Tuesday. "We will not seek to implement our own program. A coalition protocol will be worked out and this what will be implemented" Erbakan told reporters. He said the initial round of talks with party leaders would take a week, after which a second round might be required. But he indicated that he would not cling to his mandate too long if he failed to attract partners and would return it to President Suleyman Demirel. /Sabah/
[03] DYP PARTY MEETINGTrue Path Party (DYP) deputies convened yesterday for their first parliamentary group meeting. In a speech, Party Chairwoman Tansu Ciller reviewed the successes of her government in the struggle against terrorism and in dealing with heavy economic problems. She commented on the fact that Welfare Party Chairman Necmettin Erbakan had been given the task of forming a government as a requirement of the democratic process that ought to be shown proper respect. As a part of this process, Erbakan will meet with the leaders of the other parties, Ciller said and added that a coalition government with either the DYP or ANAP could be formed as a result. Nevertheless, both DYP and ANAP are bound by their promises given to the public, Ciller stressed, and added that if both parties remain loyal to these promises, the search for a new government formula will be started.After the parliamentary group meeting, the DYP General Administration Council convened. Discussing in detail possible governmental combinations, Council members viewed "warmly" a possible Motherpath-CHP coalition. Dwelling on the issue of the prime ministerial post, Council members agreed that whoever is given the task to form a new government by the President, naturally would become prime minister-designate. /Sabah-Hurriyet/
[04] POLICE NAME SUSPECTS IN SABANCI MURDERAs the apparently cold-blooded assasination of two prominent Sabanci Group business executives, Ozdemir Sabanci and Haluk Gorgun, and private secretary of Sakip Sabanci, chairman of Sabanci Group, Nilgun Hasefe, sent shockwaves throughout Turkey, the hunt for their murderers was launched yesterday by police who later disclosed the identities of three people believed to be the killers.Orhan Tasanlar, Chief of Istanbul Police, said in a press conference early Wednesday that two men and a young woman were being sought in connection with the murders. They were named as Ismail Akkol, Mustafa Duyar and Fahriye Erdal and photos of the suspects were distributed to the press. Stating that the identities had been discovered from files and video recordings made at the main gates of Sabanci Towers, Tasanlar explained that the murderers apparently entered the building through a gate without detectors. "They used 7.65 handguns and silencers, which were brought to the building before in a bag. The bag was found at the scene. Nobody heard the shots" Tasanlar said. According to Tasanlar, the two male murderers were helped by Fahriye Erdal, who was working in the building for some six months. /All papers/
[05] TURKISH OFFICES IN EUROPE ATTACKEDUnknown attackers firebombed three Turkish travel agencies in France and another in Germany on Tuesday night. The three travel agencies in Strasbourg were seriously damaged after the attacks. Fire destroyed the travel agency in Berlin's Kreuzberg district but no one was hurt, a police spokesman said. At a Turkish bank across the street from the agency, authorities found a fake firebomb. In another incident, a grocery store owned by a Turkish citizen was burnt down by unknown attackers in Weisbaden. A Turkish bank in Stuttgart was briefly occupied by a group of nine. The group was later detained by the police. /All papers/
[06] CHIEF OF GENERAL STAFF VISITS INDIAGne.Ismail Hakki Karadayi, Chief of General Staff, flew to India yesterday as an official guest of his Indian counterpart Adm.Vijay Singh Shekhawat. His official visit will last until January 15. Karadayi will also visit Indonesia between January 16-20 as an official guest of Indonesian Chief of General Staff Gen.Faisal Tanjung. /All papers/
[07] ANKARA PREFERS THE UNWhen it comes to finding a solution to the problems of Cyprus, Ankara prefers the methods of the UN rather than those of the European Union (EU). Government officials in Ankara say that the UN has been more "productive" in its ways of finding an answer to the dispute between the two communities on the island.While Ankara insists on certain terms for a solution, the EU seems to see things in a different light, and deals with the two communities accordingly. Ankara is against the two pronged methods of the EU and says that both sides must be treated equally. The UN is more inclined to deal with the situation in line with Ankara's ideas. /Cumhuriyet/
[08] ISRAEL-SYRIA PEACE TALKSPeace talks between Israel and Syria, engineered in large measure by the US are forging ahead under the hand of Secretary of State Warren Christopher who is about to embark on his sixteenth diplomatic shuttle to achieve peace.Although Syria appears to be prepared to reach some kind of compromise with Israel, Ankara is concerned that the Syrians are determined to make an issue out of the so-called "water problem" over the Euphrates River water supplies. It is expected however, that Warren Christopher will take up the matter-and that of PKK terrorism- with Syrian Head of State Hafiz Esad. Christopher will go on to have to talks with Israeli and Jordanian leaders during the course of his Middle East peace shuttle. /Milliyet/ |
