    Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning.

    [01] CILLER: TURKEY ENTERING A NEW ERA

    Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller thanked the European Union leaders for their support for Turkey's membership in the organization and gave special praise to Greece at her press conference on Monday. The EU foreign ministers, meeting in Apredoorn, the Netherlands on Sunday, said that Turkey would be treated in the same way as others seeking Union membership.

    Ciller pointed out that a new door had opened for Turkey but that the real work would start from now on. She said that despite the obstructions and negative comments by some, Turkey now, for the first time, on the track for full membership. "Turkey is entering a new era. This is the time to leave tensions in the past," Ciller said./Sabah/Cumhuriyet_

    [02] TURKEY AND IRAQ FOCUS ON UN RESOLUTIONS IN ANKARA MEETING

    A committee to discuss the bilateral issues between Iraq and Turkey gathered in the Turkish Foreign Ministry on Monday. The meeting co-chaired by Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Onur Oymen, and his Iraqi counterpart Saad el Faysal, is scheduled to last until Friday.

    Prior to the meeting Iraqi Foreign Minister el Faysal told journalists that both Turkey and Iraq suffered from U.N. sanctions, and that they would discuss now to reduce the harm caused by the sanctions.

    The committee is expected to cover the renewal of the "hot pursuit agreement" between Iraq and Turkey, which allows Turkish security forces to go into northern Iraq if they are in pursuit of militants the Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK)./Cumhuriyet/

    [03] ISRAELI FM LEVY TO VISIT TURKEY

    Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy will be arriving in Turkey for official talks with his counterpart Tansu Ciller. Levy will be in Ankara on 8-9 April to discuss growing bilateral ties between the two countries. Regional issues and particularly developments in the Middle East Peace process will also be taken up.

    [04] TURKEY READY TO JOIN ALBANIAN INTERNATIONAL FORCE

    Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller on Monday came out in favor of sending Turkish troops as a part of any international peacekeeping force to Albania and said Turkey cannot keep silent while Albania was being pulled out. "Turkey is ready to take its place in an international force. Our studies with NATO and the OSCE are continuing. The mistake that was made in Bosnia should not be repeated in Albania," Ciller told a press conference./Hurriyet/

    [05] TURKEY AND NIGERIA TO EXTEND COOPERATION IN COMMUNICATIONS

    Transportation Minister Omer Barutcu said on Monday that Turkey, with ever-developing communications services, was in a position to produce its own satellite. Speaking at the opening of bilateral meetings with Nigeria which are aimed at developing communications services between between the two countries, Barutcu said that Turkey was glad to share her experiences with Nigeria and added that Turkey's high technology products, such as optic cables, were being exported to several countries. Nigerian Communications minister Taajudeen Olanrewaju said their aim was to develop present ties with Turkey./Cumhuriyet/

    [06] IRAQ TO BUY PULSES

    It is reported that Iraq will buy 18,000 tons of pulses and butter from Turkey. According to the statements of Iraqi and United Nations' representatives in Iraq, Iraq will also buy 173,000 tons of wheat by April./Cumhuriyet/Milliyet_

    [07] 14 REFUGEES DROWNED IN BOAT SINKING

    14 northern Iraqi refugees are said to have drowned after their boat sank as they were attempting to reach Greece. The boat was carrying 22 people from the Mediterranean town of Kas to the Greek island Meis. Turkish authorities said Greek television had reported that three of those on board had reached Meis and that the search for the remaining passengers and the Turkish pilot was continuing. No one has of yet come forward to claim the bodies of those drowned and the Kas Public prosecutor stated that if nobody could be found to take responsibility the corpses within three days, they would be buried in the town's graveyard. The International Law and Foreign Relations Directorate of the Justice Ministry has taken the matter in hand./Sabah/

    [08] POWER FROM GEORGIA

    Turkey plugged into electricity from Georgia on Friday, March 14, using power connections between Hopa and Batum. It is planned that Turkey will import 70 million kilowatt hours every month.

    This means that Turkey is purchasing power from Bulgaria, Iran and now Georgia. For a total of 180 million kilowatt hours imported every month Turkey has to pay out 6.2 million dollars. The Turkish Electricity Board however, points out that there is a huge power shortfall of 2.5 billion kilowatt hours that is likely to increase. /Hurriyet/

    [09] WORK FOR TURKISH BANKS IN GEORGIA

    Top officials in neighbour Georgia have called on Turkish bankers to show more interest in their country. Georgia is one of the most stable countries in the region and is developing more ties with Turkey. There are a number of large projects, including early petrol transportation and new railway connections, that Turkey and Georgia can benefit from. But Georgia needs the know-how that Turkey can supply in the banking and finance sectors. /Milliyet/

    [10] CANAKKALE COMMEMORATED

    Today marks the 82nd commemoration of the Turkish victory in Canakkale. Top government officials will meet in Canakkale to celebrate the occasion together with military leaders.

    The Turkish Air Force special air acrobatics squadron will put on a display and in other parts of the country there will also be celebrations. /Cumhuriyet/

    [11] GESTURE FROM GREEK CYPRIOTS

    The Cyprus Greek Cypriot community has made a gesture of goodwill to the president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Rauf Denktas, by allowing the remains of his mother who died in 1925 to be carried back to the Turkish side.

    During the special arrangements to return the remains of the mother of President Denktas to the TRNC, the remains of his sister also were allowed to be carried back. Greek Cypriot officials cooperated where they could to help with the transfer. /All papers/

    [12] TURCO-IRANIAN RELATIONS

    President Suleyman Demirel is expected to meet with Iranian President Hashimi Rafsanjani during meetings to be held within the framework of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) in Pakistan. It is reported that Demirel will visit Pakistan on 22-25 March and Bangladesh on 25-27 March. /Cumhuriyet/

    [13] TURKEY CONDEMNS JORDAN INCIDENT

    Turkish Foreign Ministry Spokesman Omer Akbel has stated that the incident during which seven young girls were killed along the Jordanian-Israeli border was an individual attack and that Turkey believed the Jordanian nation and army had no connection with the incident. Declaring that Turkey condemned the attack, Akbel said however, that Turkey appreciated the efforts of Jordanian King Hussein and the Jordanian nation to walk along the path of peace, and added that Turkey supported efforts for a lasting peace in the region. /Cumhuriyet/

    [14] GREEK CYPRIOTS PURCHASE NEW MISSILES

    Greek Cypriots, who increased the tension in Cyprus by signing a S-300 missile agreement with Russia, will purchase new missiles for aerial defence systems. Tharros newspaper, published in Southern Cyprus, has reported that the Greek Cypriot administration will purchase Artenis 30 missiles from Greece and IGLA anti-aircraft missiles from Russia. /Hurriyet/

    [15] ZIRRAT BANK IN BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA

    Ziraat Bank will open a branch in Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia called "Turkish Ziraat Bank Bosnie D.D." Ziraat Bank, which has a network of branches and representations in New York, London, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Cologne, Berlin, Ruisburg, Hannover , Munich, Stuttgart, Brussels and Rotterdam will be the first Turkish bank in the Balkans.

    In a statement, it was noted that Ziraat Bank which had been in the service of the Turkish people for 133 years would continue the mission it has undertaken in the banking sector by carrying it to new international platforms./Cumhuriyet/

    [16] TURKEY IN EU DATA BANK

    Turkish Central Bank deputy governor Prof. Selcuk Abac said that Turkey's membership to the EU data bank ¨Bach" would be finalized in the coming days.

    Abac who gave a lecture on the "Assessment of the Sectoral Balance Sheet of the Central Bank" stated that they had applied to BACH, the data bank of the European Union Commission, and that when they had taken the "harmonization system" to the commission within the required 10 day period, the membership would reach its final point./Cumhuriyet/

    [17] THREE TURKISH PROFESSORS AWARDED

    In a ceremony where 39 scientists and artists were awarded for their works by Premio Internazionale "Foyer des Artists" based in Rome, three Turkish professors were also presented with certificates and gold medals. Prof. Koral Calgan was awarded a medal for founding and conducting a children's orchestra and a chamber orchestra, Prof. Sitki M.Erinc because of his work in the plastic arts and Prof. Dr. Engin Atac for setting up and developing a faculty of fine arts in Eskisehir./Cumhuriyet/
