[Design]

SEFL on Line, the website of the Union of Greek Students in London, has been designed from the ground up with, aiming to:
  • Make the identity, the objectives, and the views of SEFL widely available
  • Create a record of the recent history of the Union (since 1995)
  • Inform members and other interested parties on events and activities planned by SEFL for the near future
  • Constitute an information centre for all Greek students in the UK
  • Become an interesting starting point for anyone who wants to explore the Internet and the World Wide Web.
On the technical side, the site is largely text-based, keeping the use of graphics to a minimum, so that download time is minimised. In fact, the average size of each page of this website is some 10 Kbytes, taking less than 30" to fully download over a mediocre speed line (e.g., a telephone link using a 28.8 Kbps modem).

In terms of navigation, the site is best viewed at 800x600 or more. Recommended minimum browser window size is 700x500 pixels. The vast majority of the links included point to professional sites, for credibility and persistence. All content not developed by SEFL is displayed in a separate window, since any other approach is not 100% legal.

As far as it concerns the layout, there are three frames: The "header", displaying the logo of the Union and the top level menu ("about", "news", etc.), a "menu" responsible for displaying the submenu of each category and the access counter for each section, and a "content" frame, where the actual content is of the site displayed.

The language selected for the text of the entire site is English, not only to inform non-Greek speakers about SEFL, but equally because Greek are not so widespread in computing to date. (Particularly the University computer centres, where older machines and browsers still exist.)

Overall, this side of the Net has become live in May 1996, created by Dimitris Terzis, under the supervision and close co-operation of the then President of the Union, Michalis Michailidis, and the then Vice-President and later on President Pavlos Athanasoulas. Christos Handras, Nana Veniou and Giorgos Papalexopoulos also contributed some work a while later.

The SEFL Site was completely redesigned and largely expanded during July to September 1998, by Dimitris Terzis, current President of the Union (supervision, design, layout, text, links), and Giorgos Mpatsaras and Nikos Vangalis (custom graphics and links).
