[01] EU needs to support Greece, German virologist Harald zur Hausen
tells ANA-MPA
ANA/MPA---The European Union needs to support Greece, especially in the
sectors of science, research and technology, so as to help the country
exit the crisis, German virologist and Nobel prize laureate Harald zur
Hausen, on Friday said in an interview with ANA-MPA.
Harald zur Hausen, who was a corecipient with Francoise Barre-Sinoussi
and Luc Montagnier of the 2008 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine,
underlined that despite the crisis, the level of science research in
Greece remains high. He also stressed the importance of stopping the
country's "brain drain" adding that prolonged austerity may impair the
health of people, especially their mental health.
The 79-year old Harald zur Hausen has been professor of medicine at the
University of Heidelberg and director of the German Research Centre for
Cancer for many years. He became internationally known for his discovery
that human papilloma virus (HPV) causes cervical cancer of the uterus,
which led to the development of the relevant vaccine, and earned him
the Nobel Prize.
In 2012, he led a team of 22 top scientists (almost all Nobel laureates)
who, with a letter published in scientific journal "Science" that
was notified to the Presidents of the European Council, the European
Commission and the European Parliament, asked for their support to Greece.
