THE MACEDONIAN PRESS AGENCY IN INTERNET

Macedonian Press Agency began operating in 1990. Its establishment was the result of a will expressed by Thessaloniki's local institutions aiming at promoting northern Greece's dynamism.

At a time of of rapid changes and realignments, Macedonian Press Agency aspires to play an important role in the news reporting by taking advantage of new technologies in the sector of information. In this framework is placed and the agency's presence in Internet. It should be noted that MPA possibly was the first media channeling news into the cyberspace.

Indeed, since May 22nd, 1995 Macedonian Press Agency is sending on a daily basis a brief news bulletin in the english language through Internet under the title BRIEF GREEK NEWS BULLETIN and also a complete greek-speaking news bulletin, the MPA-NEWS under the address mpa-news@philippos.mpa.gr.

Moreover, at the above home pages one can find a complete record of MPA's news bulletins.

In the english-speaking news bulletin are included the most important greek and foreign news, mainly of political, economic and cultural nature with an emphasis on news presenting the greek positions on issues of national interest.

On the other hand, the greek-speaking news bulletin is much more analytical and consists of three parts:

DOMESTIC NEWS
covering the current political, social, economic and cultural situation in Greece. Special attention is given to the coverage of all the important events taking place in the region of northern Greece.
FOREIGN NEWS
with special emphasis on the coverage of important diplomatic, political and economic events in the sensitive Balkan region, Cyprus, Turkey and the former Soviet Republics.
NEWS OF THE GREEK COMMUNITIES ABROAD
aiming at the extensive coverage of the activities of the greek communities mainly in the United States, Canada and Australia. News, articles, interviews and analysis dealing with the daily life and the activities of the greeks living abroad are also included. This news bulletin covers extensively the events organised by the organisations of the greek communities, the Church and the centers of greek culture. In it are also promoted the activities of the soon to be established Council of the Greeks Abroad.
SPECIAL SECTION
Journalists of Macedonian Press Agency and members of its Scientific Board publish analysis on national issues and the developments in the Balkans and Turkey.
Today, Macedonian Press Agency supplies with news most of the mass media of the greek communities abroad and the Pan-Macedonian Organizations all over the world. Recipients get daily the much desired information on events taking place in Greece through Internet and MPA's electronic data bank.

Also, the news bulletins of Macedonian Press Agency together with all the international news agencies are daily on the greek lists of discussion and on the international lists which have as a subject news reports from all over the world.

In order to better serve its needs Macedonian Press Agency moves towards an autonomous presence in Internet. Beginning in the first ten days of November, a new World Wide Web server will start operating in the news agency's facilities in Thessaloniki channeling into this international network MPA's news items and the rest information material on a 24-hour basis.
