MAJOR PROJECTS IN PROGRESS


For the first time in the history of Thessaloniki so many plans have been drawn for projects which aim to present the past, promote the present and secure the future of the city.

THE «OLYMPION» CINEMA THEATRE
Located in on of the city’s main squares, it has been acquired by the Organization and is currently been renovated. It will serve as headquarters of the International Film Festival.

THE CULTURAL CENTRE OF WEST THESSALONIKI (THE LAZARIST MONASTERY)
Construction work will be completed by the summer of 1997, offering the neglected west outskirts of the city an important venue for a variety of activities.

THE NEW ROYAL THEATRE
Currently being converted into a major European theatre with a main auditorium (accommodating 825 people), an experimental theatre (with a seating capacity of 150) and a foyer where various cultural events will be held.

THE INSTITUTE OF MACEDONIAN STUDIES THEATRE
It will be expanded structurally, renovated externally and internally and equipped with facilities to accommodate opera, ballet and theatre.

THE SEIH-SOU QUARRY
An open-air theatre is being created to seat 5,000 people.

THE TELLOGLEIO FOUNDATION
This Art Gallery and Museum will offer the city the latest in contemporary avant- garde art.

IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS AT THE AIRPORT
These will facilitate the more efficient operation of the airport’s ever increasing role in passenger and commercial traffic.

WORKS AT THE RAILWAY STATION
Will upgrade the quality of services offered

THE OPEN-AIR THEATRE IN THE PARK (THEATRO KEPOU)
Plans drawn for this project envisage facilities for: theatre, concerts, lectures, and other related activities.

THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART-IFANET
Is currently under construction and will house works of contemporary art, will become the cultural and arts centre in the Balkans, as well as the centre of attraction for Greek artists abroad.


THE OPEN-AIR THEATRE IN THE FOREST (THEATRO DASOUS) This is being extended to hold 3,000 people and accommodate drama, dance and music events.

THE FIRST WHARF AT THE PORT OF THESSALONIKI
Is being remodelled into a cultural centre to meet the needs of a metropolitan city.
