NEW INSTITUTIONS OF ARTISTIC AND CULTURAL CREATIVITY FOR THE PRESENT AND THE FUTURE

MUSEUM OF THE CINEMA
The first such museum to be founded to be founded in Greece, appropriately in Thessaloniki, a city with a long cinema tradition. The large collections of the film- makers Nikos Bililis and Vasilis Papadopoulos, as well as the painted giant cinema posters of K. Arvanitidis, will be housed at the First Wharf at the port of Thessaloniki, currently being remodelled.

MUSEUM OF PHOTOGRAPHY
The museum’s offices will be located at a listed building on Anageniseos street, while the rich photographic collection, donated by the Greek Museum of Photography, will be housed at an appropriately renovated building on Andreou Georgiou street. This will constitute a modern museum with exhibition areas and photography labs.

MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART
The Museum, located at the old IFANET textile factory, will be a place for application, research, cultivation, study and promotion of artistic creativity.

WATER WORKS MUSEUM
The museum will protect and promote the technical heritage of the city, and is also conceived as a research, documentation and information centre for the history of water supply project of water as a natural resource.

INTERNATIONAL THEATRE FESTIVAL (SPRING FESTIVAL)
An annual meeting place for European theatre. The Organization for the Cultural Capital of Europe in co-operation with the Experimental Theatre «Techni» meets the needs of the demanding public of Thessaloniki with this three-week festival on the newest trends in European theatre.

THE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA OF THESSALONIKI
The Cultural Capital will create an Opera House in the City where high-standard international productions will be held. The education, specialization, and career opportunities for young musicians, as well as the training of key members and the participation of all art circles in Thessaloniki, will now become a reality. The Municipal Orchestra, the State Theatre of Northern Greece, and the Centre for Orchestral Art are contributing to the founding of this new institution.

ART WORKSHOPS
Thessaloniki is a city of young people. The Cultural Capital of Europe aims to involve them in a variety of cultural activities. 100 art workshops are being created, especially in the regional municipalities , to train and offer them opportunities for the future.

THE WRITER’S HOME
One of the listed buildings in the Upper City will house he archives and photographic material of literary life in Thessaloniki.

CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL
An annual event where renowned international and Greek music groups perform their work in major venues in the city. In 1995, this was held at the Yeni Jami and the Catholic church and in 1996, at the Museum of Byzantine Culture.

EUROPEAN YOUTH FESTIVAL
A new festival which includes performances by young musicians from Greece and the rest of Europe, as well as large orchestras.

THESSALONIKI DESIGN MUSEUM
The only museum of its kind in Greece, aiming at a systematic approach to design. It houses a permanent collection of 1,200 representative objects of classic 20th century industrial design, while other exhibitions by modern well-known designers are also held on its premises.

THE TECHNICAL MUSEUM OF THESSALONIKI
A science and technology museum, where information on the achievements of the post-industrial era is combined with «hands-on» activities. The museum is supported by the Organization for the Cultural Capital of Europe - «Thessaloniki 97»
