  • [01] Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu examined the drinking water situation

The Prime Minister of Romania, Mugur Isarescu, together with the Minister of Waters, Forests and Environmental Protection, Romica Tomescu analyzed the drinking water situation of this country. As might be known the level of water in the accumulation lakes has decreased dramatically of late so there is the risk for some regions of the country to have less and less drinking water. Proper decisions in this sense are taken during the Cabinet session today.

[02] Secretary of State with the Foreign Ministry of Romania is paying a visit to Germany

Secretary of State with the Foreign Ministry of Romania, Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, arrived in Germany for a four day visit. He will meet with the deputy of the Federal Foreign Affairs Minister, with the Presidents of the Parliamentary Commissions of Defense and Foreign Policy as well as with the Chairman of the German Parliament. In a statement to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI Mihai Razvan Ungureanu said he would tackle NATO enlargement, Romania's becoming Chairman of OSCE starting 1 January 2000, the Pact of Stability in South Eastern Europe as well as the problem of the visas for the Romanian citizens to the Schengen countries.

[03] Meeting between Emma Nicholson and Ion Iliescu

The reporter for Romania for the European Parliament, Emma Nicholson met with the President of PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania - Ion Iliescu. During the talk it was stressed by Emma Nicholson that corruption has become a scourge in this country and it was absolutely necessary to set up an efficient system of public administration, unitary, without any political implication and utterly professional. However, Emma Nicholson estimated that the most important problem which Romania must solve was that of institutionalized children.

The President of PDSR said that adherence to the European Union was an absolute priority and that in this sense his party was interested in permanent and very direct relations with the European bodies.

[04] The Patriarch of Romania, His Beatitude Teoctist, is visiting Poland

The delegation of the Romanian Orthodox Church led by His Beatitude Teoctist arrived at Byalistock last night. The Orthodox community in that part of Poland made an impressive reception to the guests at the Saint Nicholas Cathedral. There are about three hundred thousand believers in that part of Poland, about 180 kms, North - West of Warsaw.

In the Polish capital yesterday His Beatitude Teoctist gave His Beatitude Sava, the Metropolitan Primate of Warsaw and of entire Poland several gifts including an icon of Virgin Mary. The Polish high men of the cloth were given the order MIRON CRISTEA of the Patriarchy of Romania while the Romanian Ambassador to Poland, Irina Comarovsky was awarded the Patriarchal Cross for Laymen as a blessing at the beginning of her diplomatic career in Poland.

[05] New discoveries attesting Romanian education in Transylvania

A discovery in the archives of the museum of the first Romanian school at the Church SAINT NICHOLAS of the town of Brasov modifies some elements regarding the age, as it were, of Romanian education in the town of Brasov and in south eastern Transylvania. The principal of the school Vasile Oltean told the correspondent of RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI that a fragment of a teaching book in the archives was dated, according to international standards, as having an age of 800 years. Thus we can certify that Romanian education in that part of the country is at least 800 years old, a fact which places it in the XI - th century, four centuries earlier than considered to have been attested until now. As you might know education in that interval was conducted in a building adjoining the church and it was entirely based on books of religion.
