Disy launches election campaign

THE presidential elections, particularly the launch Sunday of President Clerides' election campaign and on-going speculation on who Diko will pick as presidential candidate were the two main stories in yesterday's press. Other front-page reports include complaints by Diko president Spyros Kyprianou that his telephone was under surveillance.

Alithia leads on the launch of Clerides' election campaign. It says that a meeting of Disy members had turned into a huge rally and a spontaneous expression of love and recognition of Clerides. The paper says four Disy deputies had been absent from Sunday's meeting -- Yiannakis Matsis, Demetris Syllouris and Christos Pourgourides whose names have been linked with efforts to find an alternative candidate, and Socratis Hasikos who is in Athens for professional reasons.

To Tharros also leads on the Disy meeting. Under the banner headline "Ovation" the paper says that Disy was united behind the candidacy of incumbent Glafcos Clerides. It reports extensively on speeches by Clerides and Disy president Nicos Anastassiades and adds that Diko was expected yesterday to decide what to do about the presidential elections.

Simerini's headline on the presidential elections leads "All the scenarios still open." It says that Disy was making openings to Diko while Kyprianou was keeping his cards closed as to what he planned to do. According to Simerini a round of behind-the-scenes contacts had been underway to clarify which candidate Diko would back for the presidential elections the only thing being clear that Kyprianou was adamant in not supporting Clerides.

Agon says that Sunday's rally had sent a clear message that Clerides would be re-elected. It says that during the meeting Disy had extended a hand of cooperation to Diko.

Haravgi also leads on the presidential elections, but reports on the on-going campaign of independent presidential candidate George Iacovou. The paper carries Iacovou's election gathering at Palechori where he had expressed the certainty he will be elected.

The paper also reports on Kyprianou's claims that his phone was being tapped.

Phileleftheros leads on developments in Turkey's bid to secure a place in the European Conference . It says that there were behind the scenes diplomatic consultations to persuade Greece to allow Turkey to participate. It says the December 13 scheduled start of the meeting may be postponed to give time for consultations to succeed.

In another front page story Phileleftheros says that the Ministry of Justice was thinking of providing judges with armed guards to protect them against organised crime.
