[01] Christofias on Turkish appeals against military base
Nicosia, Feb 1 (CNA) -- Turkey has no right to protest to the UN Security
Council against the Republic of Cyprus, left-wing AKEL Secretary General,
Dimitris Chritofias has said.
Referring to a letter by Turkey's permanent representative to the UN,
addressed to the UN Secretary General, which protests against the
construction of a military base in the southern district of Paphos,
Christofias says:
"The great powers should stress to Turkey the inalienable right of the
Republic of Cyprus to defend itself".
Pointing out that Turkey occupies part of the Republic of Cyprus,
Christofias criticises the UN Security Council for allowing Turkey to
appeal against Cyprus.
Turkey has repeatedly ignored UN Security Council Resolutions calling
for the withdrawal of its troops from the island.
