[02] Greek Parliamentary Speaker - Press conference

by Maria Chrysanthou New York, Sep 1 (CNA) -- The President of the Greek Parliament Apostolos Kaklamanis has charged that Turkey is undermining every effort to settle the Cyprus question and called on the US to stop giving the impression to Ankara and the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash that they stand by their side.

Addressing the conference of presiding officers of national parliaments, Kaklamanis referred to the continuing violation of human rights in Cyprus by Turkey and said he told UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan that UN- sponsored peace talks have not led anywhere so far because of Turkey's intransigence.

[03] Spokesman - Exports from occupied areas

Nicosia, Sep 1 (CNA) - The government would be prepared to reconsider its position on exports from the northern Turkish occupied areas of the Republic if and when the peace talks make headway and a solution of the political problem emerges, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today.

The Spokesman also said the issue of what the Turkish Cypriots call an "economic embargo" against them has an international dimension, in that international organisations do not accept certificates of export issued by the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime and this consequently prohibits economic activity and exports from the occupied areas to Europe.
