    [01] UN Special Adviser - UN Secretary-General's statement

    by Maria Myles New York, Sep 14 (CNA) - The UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, said that "the UN Secretary-General's statement of September 12 was his own statement and he is the only authoritative source of interpretation of it".

    In a written statement issued by the United Nations, de Soto noted that "accordingly, interpretations placed upon his statement by others do not have any validity". CNA/MM/RG/RM/2000

    [02] President Clerides - Greek Foreign Minister

    by Maria Myles New York, Sep 14 (CNA) - Greece and Cyprus are in close contact and coordinate their efforts with a view to promote a Cyprus settlement in the framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou said in New York today.

    Speaking after a lengthy meeting with President Glafcos Clerides, Papandreou avoided any comment on a statement by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, noting that any announcements would be made by President Clerides. CNA/MM/RM/RG/2000

    [03] Cyprus - Foreign Trade Statistics

    Nicosia, Sep 14 (CNA) - Cyprus' foreign trade increased during the January- June 2000 period compared to the same period last year, according to the Statistical Service.

    Total imports reached 1.136,5 million Cyprus pounds, compared to 932,1 million in 1999, while total exports reaced 304,3 million pounds compared to 252,2 million in January-June 1999. (one Cyprus pound = 1.5 US dollars)

    [04] Illegal immigrants - Limassol

    Nicosia, Sep 14 (CNA) -- The illegal immigrants who were saved from drowning yesterday when their boat sank off the shores of western Cyprus will sail from the south-western coastal town of Paphos to Limassol where arrangements for their final destination will be made, Police said here today.

    Paphos Police said the 266 illegal immigrants who are mainly Iranians and Kurds had set off from Lebanon for Italy.

    [05] T/C businessman - Illegal regime - Free areas

    Nicosia, Sep 14 (CNA) -- Turkish Cypriot businessman Elmas Giouzelgiortlou, who has fled to the free areas of the Republic, after alleging that his life was threatened in the Turkish-occupied areas of the island, left Cyprus yesterday police sources told CNA today.

    Elmas, who is accused of embezzlement and is the owner of a bank in the occupied areas of Cyprus which went bankrupt, told Cyprus authorities that he wished to leave Cyprus in order to gather information to defend himself and gather money for his bank. CNA/RM/GP/2000

    [06] Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Sep 14 (CNA) -- According to the Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport, the weather forecast for Cyprus is:

    Friday and Saturday: 15/9/2000 to 16/9/2000

    The weather on Friday will be mainly fine with some temporal cloud. The wind will prevail Southwest to West gentle to moderate 3 to 4 bf and the state of sea will be slight locally moderate. During night the weather will become mainly fine with some patchy cloud. The wind will be northwest 2 to 3 bf and the state slight.

    On Saturday the weather will become locally partly cloudy with probable showers and isolated thunderstorms. The wind will become gradually southwest to west 3 to 4 bf and the state of sea will be slight to moderate.

    The minimum temperature will range from 19 to 21 C and the maximum temperature from 29 to 33C.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 17/9/2000 to 18/9/2000

    The weather will be mainly fine with some patchy cloud. The wind will prevail west 3 to 4 bf. The temperature will remain without any signifiqant change.

    [07] Cyprus Defence Minister - Greece

    Nicosia, Sep 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus' Defence Minister Sokrates Hasikos will visit Greece between 1 - 4 October, at the invitation of Greece's National Defence Ministry.

    Defence Ministry spokesman Andreas Giorkas told CNA that Hasikos will visit Greece on the occasion of the defence exhibition "Defendory 2000" organised in Athens by the Greek Ministry.

    [08] Interior Minister - Lebanon - Illegal immigrants

    Nicosia, Sep 14 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government has contacted the Lebanese government regarding the arrival of 266 illegal immigrants from Lebanon, in bid to send them back, in accordance with a bilateral agreement providing for the return of illegal immigrants coming from this neighbouring country.

    The island's Interior Minister Christodoulos Christodoulou today informed Lebanon's charge d' affaires in Nicosia Constantin Tabet about the illegal immigrants, who arrived here Wednesday from his country and requested that a bilateral agreement providing for their return is activated.
