    Cypriot Foreign Minister addresses conference in Turkey

    Constantinople, Feb 12 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has called on mankind to put a halt to those using diversity to justify conflict, pointing out that dialogue can transcend discord, harmonise human relations and solve differences as well as sow the seeds of a culture of peace, but recognised that in many parts of the world there is systematic and atrocious violations of human rights.

    In his address to the joint forum of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference and the European Union, which got underway here today, the minister said Cyprus is a vivid example of a melting pot of civilisations and has an important role to play linking cultures, adding that dialogue is imperative among nations if human relations and differences are to be solved.

    British envoy hopes for Cyprus settlement this year

    Larnaca, Feb 12 (CNA) - Britain's Special Representative Lord David Hannay arrived in Cyprus this afternoon, stating that the purpose of his visit was to listen to the views of Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, currently engaged in direct talks to reach a Cyprus settlement, and those of the UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, on the process so far and on the immediate prospects for the future.

    Bundestag delegation to visit Cyprus

    Nicosia, Feb 12 (CNA) - An eight-member delegation of the Committee for Finance of the German Bundestag arrives in Cyprus on Thursday, February 14, for a three-day visit, during which it will have meetings with Ministers and parliamentary officials, among others.

    On Thursday, the delegation will be received by House President Demetris Christofias and will meet with Finance Minister Takis Klirides, the Head of the Negotiating Team for Cyprus' accession to the EU George Vassiliou, and the Chairman and members of the Committee on Financial and Budgetary Affairs.

    Cyprus and Malta initial agreement on merchant shipping

    Nicosia, Feb 12 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Malta have initialled an agreement on merchant shipping, providing, inter alia, for the granting of national treatment to the ships of the two countries while they are in each other's ports, mutual recognition of the certificates of each country's ships and of their sailor's identity documents and cooperation in case of accidents at sea.

    Soccer: Cyprus beats Switzerland

    Nicosia, Feb 12 (CNA) -- Cyprus' national football team beat the Swiss national team 4-2 in the penalty procedure here today for the sixth soccer tournament of national teams being held in Cyprus.

    Even the 30-minute extra time the match ended in a 1-1 draw. Cyprus opened the score in the 21st minute and Switzerland equalised in the 32nd minute.

    Nicosia, Feb 12 (CNA)-- Palestinian President Yaser Arafat met yesterday in Ramallah, a two-member delegation of Cyprus left-wing Party Akel currently visiting Palestinian territory and Israel. Arafat reiterated his adherence to the peace process, the need for the termination of the circle of violence and stressed the necessity to increase international pressure for returning to the negotiations.
