Restoration in occupied monastery and free mosque continues

Nicosia, Jul 9 (CNA) -- Local tradition and culture as well as the religious significance of two of the island's most revered monuments must be preserved in the ongoing effort to restore the monastery of Apostolos Andreas, in the Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus, and the Hala Sultan Tekke, in the government-controlled southern part of the island.

This was the message the two world renown professors, Giorgio Croci working at the monastery and Saleh Lamei Mostafa at the Tekke, who have undertaken this arduous task, have conveyed during a presentation to outline the work in this project, which began about two years ago at an estimated cost of five million dollars.

President to address nation to mark anniversary of Turkish invasion

Nicosia, Jul 9 (CNA) -- The Cyprus cabinet has decided to organise a series of events to mark this year's anniversary of the Turkish invasion, which took place on 20 July 1974, following an abortive coup to topple the legal president of the Republic the late Archbishop Makarios III.

President Glafcos Clerides will address the nation in a televised message on the eve of the invasion.

The purpose of all the events is to protest and condemn the continuing illegal occupation of the island's northern areas and to reiterate the people's resolve to work even harder for justice and peace.

Memorial services will take place for those killed during the military coup, engineered by the then junta ruling Greece, and during the Turkish invasion.

Sirens will sound at 0815 on 15 July when the coup started and 0530 on 20 July when Turkey launched its offensive against Cyprus.

The Press and Information Office will circulate a special commemorative leaflet, posters will be published and special TV spots will be aired in Cyprus and in Greece.
