    Six-member committee investigates helicopter crash

    Nicosia, Jul 11 (CNA) -- Cyprus Defence Minister Socratis Hasikos has said that indications are that the military helicopter, which crashed yesterday near Paphos, made an emergency landing due to an engine problem or fire.

    Five officers of the National Guard, aboard the helicopter, including its Commander, Lieutenant General Evangelos Florakis, were killed in the crash, near the western coastal town of Paphos.

    Hasikos noted that the Defence Ministry has set up a six-member committee to investigate the circumstances under which the Bell 206 crashed.

    Two experts from Greece arrived yesterday to join their Cypriot colleagues in the investigations.

    Funeral of Cyprus army chief

    Nicosia, Jul 11 (CNA) -- The funeral of Cyprus' National Guard Commander, Lieutenant General Evangelos Florakis, who was killed together with four other army officers at a helicopter crash yesterday, will take place at 1100 local time (0800 GMT) tomorrow in Nicosia.

    The funeral will be attended by the political, church and military leadership headed by Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides.

    The Greek government will be represented by National Defence Minister Yiannos Papantoniou. Greek Armed Forces senior officers will also be present.

    The army chief will be buried in the western town of Paphos, where the Florakis family live.

    The other officers killed are Cyprus Air Force Commander, Brigadier Stelios Demenagas, Lieutenant Nikos Georgiou, Flight Lieutenant Paris Athanasiades and Flank Officer Michalis Shiakallis.

    Shiakallis' funeral will take place this afternoon at Nicosia's suburban village of Strovolos.

    Athanasiades' funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon in Nicosia.

    Nicosia, Jul 11 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    On Friday and Saturday 12/07/2002 to 13/07/2002

    On Friday, cloud will gradually develop, giving local showers and possibly isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon. Overnight, local mist is expected, mainly towards dawn.

    Variable, light to gentle winds will be blowing initially but gradually moderate and locally in the afternoon, fresh, southwesterly to westerly winds will prevail.

    The sea will be slight initially, but in the afternoon up to moderate, mainly at the south coast.

    Maximum temperature, 34C inland, 29-30C at the coasts and around 24C over Troodos area.

    Minimum temperature, around 22C inland and at the coasts and around 15C over Troodos area.

    On Saturday, mainly fine weather is expected over the coasts, but inland and over mountain areas, there is a chance of showers, in the afternoon.

    Winds and temperature will note no significant change. Local mist is also possible overnight.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday 14/07/2002 to 15/07/2002

    On Sunday and Monday, the weather is expected to be fine.

    Maximum temperature will rise gradually.

    Cyprus House amends legislation to be in line with EU law

    Nicosia, Jul 11 (CNA) -- The Cyprus House of Representatives approved this afternoon a bill amending the Penal Code, abolishing any discrimination between men and women regarding offences of a sexual nature, thus bringing the island in line with EU law.
