    Cyprus President adheres to May 1 deadline for solution

    Nicosia, Mar 3 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has stressed that his objective remains to find a negotiated settlement by May 1, when Cyprus joins the European Union.

    He said he wants to engage in substantive negotiations on core issues and not in an exchange of extreme positions.

    Cypriots must decide without outside interference, says Russian envoy

    Nicosia, Mar 3 (CNA) -- Russia believes that Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots should decide about their future without any outside pressure, Alexander Alekseyev, the Russian Foreign Ministry special envoy on Cyprus, has said.

    In an interview with CNA, on conclusion of his meetings here, he said it would be difficult to predict what would happen if there is no solution by May 1, the set deadline for the conclusion of this latest effort under UN auspices to reunite Cyprus and enable it to join the European Union.

    Status of territories to be returned discussed at talks

    Nicosia, Mar 3 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos said that today's discussions for a political settlement focused on the status of the territories, now under Turkish occupation, which will be returned to Greek Cypriots under an eventual deal.

    ''We are trying to safeguard that areas to be returned are put under the supervision of the Security Council for the period prescribed in the UN peace proposal under negotiation, until they are actually handed to the Greek Cypriot side,'' President Papadopoulos said.
