    Nicosia, Mar 16 (CNA) -- British MEP James Elles stressed today that no permanent derogations from the acquis communautaire should be given for a solution of the Cyprus problem, since this would be contrary to the principles of the EU and could cause problems during negotiations with other pre-accession countries.

    Elles was speaking on the sidelines of the Joint EU - Cyprus Parliamentary Committee that convenes here for the last time. He stressed that Turkey should not be given the green light for accession negotiations, should it come up with a solution of the Cyprus issue.

    Nicosia, Mar 16 (CNA) -- The European Union - Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) began today its last meeting in Nicosia, during which it will discuss the political situation in Cyprus as well as EU relations.

    This morning the Members of the European Parliament delegation were briefed by the European Ambassadors in Nicosia, as well as by EU officials in Cyprus, behind closed doors, on recent political developments in the Cyprus problem, as well as on the island's harmonisation process with EU laws.

    Larnaca, Mar 16 (CNA) - UN Undersecretary General for Political Affairs Sir Kieran Prendergast arrived in Cyprus today to review progress in talks to solve the Cyprus problem and to meet with the leaders of the two communities.

    Speaking on arrival, Sir Kieran said he thought the talks would probably enter a second phase, with the participation of Greece and Turkey, noting that if there is still a deadlock, then Secretary General Kofi Annan would finalise his solution plan and put it to referenda.

    Nicosia, Mar 16 (CNA) - Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou believes that the document given to the two sides in Cyprus yesterday by the UN chief's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto would not predetermine the dialogue to take place in the next phase of negotiations for a Cyprus settlement, with the participation of Greece and Turkey, because it did not contain issues of fundamental importance for the two guarantor powers.

    EPP EuroMPs say Turkey's EU bid depends on Copenhagen criteria

    Brussels, Mar 16 (CNA) - Three European Popular Party (EPP) members of the European Parliament said today that the decision to commence EU accession negotiations with Turkey should be based exclusively on the Copenhagen criteria, adding that Ankara should not be allowed to benefit from talks to solve the Cyprus problem.

    This position is expressed in a statement signed by the three EuroMPs, who represent all political trends in the EPP, which is the largest political group in the European Parliament, holding 232 seats.
