    UN SG sends invitations for Cyprus talks in Switzerland

    United Nations, Mar 18 (CNA) -- The UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has sent invitations to Greece, Turkey, the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides for the enlarged Cyprus negotiations in Burgenstock, Switzerland, according to well informed sources.

    In the two-page letters, Annan extends the invitations for a meeting on 23 March, on the basis of the New York agreement that indicates enlarged talks between the representatives of the four parties at an authoritative level.

    Nicosia, Mar 18 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 19/03/2004 to 20/03/2004 -------------------- Mainly fine weather on Friday and Saturday.

    Southwesterly to Northwesterly prevailling winds, 3 to 4 BF over daytime and 2 to 3 over night.

    Temperatures will range between 5 C and 18 C inland, 7 C and 18 C over the coastal areas and between 2 C and 9 C over the mountains.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 21/3/2004 to 22/3/2004 ------------------------------ The weather will continue to be mainly fine. Temperature is expected to increase gradually.

    Nicosia, Mar 18 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos had a telephone conversation with Russias new Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

    In a statement, Russias Foreign Ministry said that the phone call took place on 17 March.

    The two focused on "the situation concerning the talks for a Cyprus settlement and their prospects, the statement said.

    Turkey needs to continue reforms, solve Cyprus question

    Brussels, Mar 18 (CNA) -- Turkey had made great strides in its effort to align itself with European Union laws and regulations but needs to implement legislation passed and to solve the Cyprus issue.

    This is the conclusion of a report by rapporteur Arie Oostlander on Turkey's progress towards EU accession, which the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs adopted with a large majority.

    The Committee continues to insist that a settlement in Cyprus is an essential condition for progress regarding Turkey's application for accession to the EU.

    Nicosia, Mar 18 (CNA) -- Fighting Democratic Movement (ADIK) President Dinos Michaelides and Turkish Cypriot Peace and Democracy Movement leader Mustafa Akkinci appeared cautious today over Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash's decision not to attend the enlarged negotiations between the two sides with the participation of Greece and Turkey, under UN auspices, in Switzerland next week.

    ''Denktash's decision not to attend the enlarged talks does not solve the Denktash problem for the Greek Cypriot side and this should be evaluated by our leadership'', Michaelides told the press, while Akkinci said that whether Denktash would attend the enlarged talks in the end was up to the Turkish government.

    UN: Cyprus talks process to be finalised next week

    Larnaca, Mar 18 (CNA) -- Sir Kieran Prendergast, UN Under Secretary General for Political Affairs, has said that the process of the Cyprus talks moves next week in Switzerland and anybody who is not present is not in the process.

    He also said that the UN have sought clarifications about a decision by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash not to attend next week's talks and stressed that the UN wants representatives of Greece, Turkey, the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides who are empowered to take final decisions.

    Nicosia, Mar 18 (CNA) - Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accepted an invitation by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to attend the enlarged Cyprus talks that will begin in Switzerland next week.

    According to Turkish news agency Anadolu, Erdogan will leave for Switzerland on 28 March. Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis also said earlier he would attend the talks to take place at Burgenstock.

    London, Mar 18 (CNA) - The British Foreign Office hopes that both sides in Cyprus will attend the enlarged Cyprus talks in Switzerland next week and that they will continue their efforts for a settlement of the Cyprus question.
