[01] LATVIAN PRESIDENT - CYPRUS PROBLEM
President of Latvia Vaira Vike-Freiberga has expressed support to
Cyprus efforts to achieve a peaceful, just and viable bizonal,
bicommunal, federal settlement that will reunite Cyprus.
Receiving the credentials of the new Cypriot Ambassador to Riga Pavlos
Anastasiades, the Lavian President was briefed on the Cyprus question
and the country`s engagement to achieve a settlement, based on
international law principles, the UN Charter and resolutions and the
values and principles on which the EU is founded.
An official press release said the Latvian President expressed support
to Cyprus efforts, underlining the importance for respect to these
fundamental principles.
The Cypriot Ambassador briefed Vike-Freiberga on the current situation
of the Cyprus question, as a result of the ongoing occupation of part
of Cyprus, including the plight of refugees, illegal settlement by
mainland Turks and the destruction of the cultural heritage.
